Hi,

one of the screw's/bolts on the lid of the air filter housing has sheared off. Is there any easy (relatively speaking :)) way of fixing this myself or is it time to fork out for a new air-filter housing?

Thanks

HI mate,

In short, its buggered, once they have snapped or stripped you`ve had it, i struggled with mine for months, trying chemical metal, sealers etc.
New airbox housing over ÂŁ100, so i got a BMC CDA kit from angel tuning, A bit more power and no more hassle.;)

Check out their website for your car details.

I'll have to do the same on the spider soon as the last service they snapped a lug off on the front of the airbox. I have it clamped at the moment but it's not ideal.

Tried getting them to admit it but they wouldn't, and as it was a little while before I noticed I couldn't do much about it.

I found that my airbox had 2 missing screws and the captive nuts too. I bonded a new pair of captive nuts into the lower air filter housing using Isopon fibreglass. Then used appropriate nut and big washer to secure the filter together. It doesn't look pretty but it does the job and cost about five or six pounds to do. It would appear that previous garages split the air filter housing on seal line, and repeatedly used this as access point, then sealed it up with silicone and zip ties!

It works now and can be opened normally

A large washer and a woodchip screw will fix it short term.

Really, I`m not kidding! Just run the screw down the side of the metal insert.
Had this done to my twinspark - by the dealer. at one service or another - first time I noticed was when I went to fit the sport filter/V6 induction mod (first time I looked at it) when the modding bug bit - by then had no recourse to complain.....

It's happened on my wife's car too - a really cheap and nasty beit of design. Brass inserts with steel screws right near the front of the car. YUK. This is obviously locking the door after the horse has bolted but I'd be inclined to replace the screws with stainless ones if they haven't already seized. Incidentally, I drilled out the brass inserts on my wife's car and tapped the plastic with a big tap (M10 or M12, can't remember) and just screwed big bolts into the new thread in the plastic. Seems OK so far.

can you post them on this thread? I'd like to see how it looks too.

with the price of of a new air box I'm thinking of going for a CDA.
Ok, Here we go, taken them with my phone, hope they are ok.!
P.S, the CDA is still located where the original airbox was, but with intake below front bumper.

Does that intake not fill up with water and crud a bit too easily? Would be better to be a bit higher up surely.
Good Point mate, but had no bother at all so far (touch wood!!!),
The intake pipe is as high up as it can be,its fastened to bottom of inner wing/chassis.
It sits about an inch lower than the bottom of the front bumper/valance, and has never filled up with water as its a steep upward bend to the bottom of the CDA.

I have yet to dismantle it and re-generate it with the cleaning kit i have, but not looking forward to that, as it looks a right T**T of a job!

Thanks for the pics and info Cragmaz. Think I might go for a CDA when I have the time to sort it. Did you notice any difference in performance or sound after you fitted it?
Not much performance gain, but a bit more responsive.
Mainly got one for ease of maintenance, cos my airbox was falling apart more and more every time i changed the filter element.

But, the noise.......Wow!!!!, sounds totally awesome-Really!!!
You would think it was a Dump Valve blowing off, if you are hard throttle and short shift, every gearchange is follwed by a loud "WOOOSH"!, also a lot more Turbo whistle, as it allows more open airflow to it, Typically, what i love to do is, mid-revs in 2nd, then floor the throttle!, a lovely loud turbo whistle upto 5,000rpm, and rapido speed, followed by a loud "whoosh" again up into 3rd.
Purely Beautiful!!!

Obviously, as regards a petrol engine, i cant really say how it would sound and perform.
Hope this helps!
