hi guys.

alfa romeo to me is supposed to be a more higher class car with beautiful styling and decent performance. Yet every time I start the car up a get a smoke bomb coming out the exhaust. this doesn't happen all the time but it probably happens 90% of the time. if you haven't guessed all ready I have the 1.9jtdm GT. the smoke coming out looks like a white colour but a guy at work the other day says it looked like a blueish.
just wondering if this could be due to a boost leak or something, iv read to many of these threads now and the ones iv read don't seem to get a answer to this problem. so does anyone actually know what this is and how to fix it?

cheers

I'd be thinking 'burning oil' with blue smoke , cold damp engine or water leak if white smoke plus the jolly old black stuff with any standard diesel is fairly norm --- unless it's been remapped by Gus or Adie , in which case it shouldn't smoke at all , mine doesn't but did as standard.

Slight grey smoke on mine at startup. When being MOT'd both the tester and I have noted the smell is quite strong, makes your eyes water a bit. Accompanied with a small amount of visible smoke on idle. It always passes the smoke test though. No idea what it is like on the move.

I get a puff of white/gray smoke on cold startup. However, I have no smoke on idle on a warm engine and have always had an easy smoke test pass at MOT. I have no other symptoms so I don't worry about it. Basically, a stone cold diesel engine will not combust cleanly. My old Petter generator (150 cc) used to emit 10x the amount of smoke on startup but ran clean once warm :)

Mine is the same and really only became noticeable after the EGR was surgically removed! Normally the majority of exhaust gases would be recirculated but without the EGR it can't happen. All is well on hot restarts though.

Do you do short trips a lot? I had similar, not only on startup but when i gave it some moderate beans....took it out the other week, redlined it in all gears and when i hit the throttle in 3rd a mahoosive cloud of black smoke billowed out the back. Been ok since!
