Dension Gateway Lite BT connection in boot - Alfa 159

Hi,

My alfa 159 comes with the Bosch/Blaupunkt 939 head unit and it has a 10 Disc CD changer in the boot. No USB, No Bluetooth, No Aux.

I want to be able to stream music via bluetooth to my car sound system, and I was looking for the least complicated way of doing it. So, after a lot of research, I came across this:

Gateway Lite BT | A2DP | Bluetooth handsfree calls

This seems to do what I want. Question is, how do I fix it?

I never use the CD changer in the boot, so that device is useless to me. So, I am wondering if I can unplug the cable connection to the CD changer in the boot and the plug that same connector into the Dension Gateway Lite BT product. Therefore, the Dension takes the place of the CD changer in the boot.

If it is that simple to plug and play the Dension Gateway Lite BT in the boot, that would be ideal. Then I can maybe do it myself and save having to pay someone to do a complicated installation for me like to take out the head unit and install etc etc.

Can someone who knows this kind of stuff help me by letting me know:

1. Is it possible to unplug the CD changer in the boot and plug the same connector into the Dension Gateway Lite BT

2. If this can work, how do I remove the CD changer in the boot? I took a look it and I can't figure out how to remove the CD changer to undo the connector. I don't want to pull out the boot liner where the CD changer is deeply attached to the boot and accidentally tear/break something. Anybody can walk me through it please?

3. If all the above is possible, would the Dension Gateway Lite BT continously draw power from my car battery even if the head unit of my car stereo is not on or engine is switched off? I don't want it to be draining my car battery if my car stereo is switched off. The reason I asked is because the CD changer in the boot can draw power to eject the cd magazine even though engine it completely off. I would not want the Dension bluetooth product to continually draw power even when not used.

Appreciate anyone's help on this.

Many thanks!

i have disconnected the cd stacker in mine and just left it in place.

the reason why i disconnected it was so i could put an AUX cable in its place on the back of the head unit.

in terms of draining power. you should be able to connect you BT device using the "accessories" 12V wire, instead of the battery power (head units usually use both so that even when off there is power to eject and/or operate the radio for some period of time.)

it depends on the power cable for this unit on how you want to wire it up. But most likely you would take an accessory and the ground wire and jumper them to your unit.

I have the LT (no BT) version installed in my Alfa. No CD changer in my case, so it was connected directly to the car stereo (plug and play, it uses the same connection as CD changer, AFAIR no extra power connection was needed). I wanted access to the connectors (usually I have iPod connected all the time, but sometimes I connect iPhone), so the adapter is placed in glove compartment and I would suggest similar installation :)

You don't remove the changer in the boot, you remove the head unit and disconnect the CD changer cable from it. Then the Dension comes with a connector that will go straight into your head unit where the CD changer used to.

Its plug & play. I have fitted many, usually in Audi's. I even have a couple in the garage spare from old installs!

You remove the head unit with special tools that can be got from any ICE company or online, however if you are impatient and dont want to wait, go get a metal coat hanger, cut 2 s 12" lengths from it and bend them in half with a 2" distance apart (5", bend 90 degrees, 2", bend 90 degrees) to make a U shape. Make 2 of them.

Put those into the small holes on each side of the head unit and push in then pull the head unit out. Its fiddly, and you need to find a way to grab onto the head unit, but it will come out.

The cable that connects the CD changer will be labelled on the back of the head unit but it will also be the same as the one on your Dension, and they are handed / unique so they can only go in the right place on the head unit.

Enjoy!

Great bit of kit :)

Sorry if this comes across as a silly question, but why is it not possible to simply unplug the CD changer connection in the boot and reattach the same cable to the Dension unit (assuming they use the same connectors), so that the Dension sits in the boot?

Thanks for your help. This mystery to me is slowly unravelling. :)

I too wanted to fit the Dension unit in the boot instead of the CD changer. I couldn't even find a way to remove the CD changer so I gave up and connected it to the head unit.

Now I am thinking to remove the useless changer anyway to get a little more space for some other junk I'd carry in the boot. Is there a way to remove it easily?

Yesterday I got mine Dension Gateway Lite BT and now I'm thinking where to put this little thing as there is no enough free space available behind the headunit and there is no easy way to install it in the glove box as you have to drill the hole for wire harness and so on. I don't want to do that. Anyone have tried to connect it in the boot using the 13 pin din cable?
