alfa 156 JTD 'over-boosting' issue

Hi All,

I have a major problem with my first ever purchased Alfa Romeo.

I hope you can shed some light on a major problem that I have.
I bought an Alfa 156 2.4 JTD 150Bhp on 2003 03 plate (pre-face lift) in a private sale, at the end of Nov 09. The second day I went to use it, I noticed diesel leaking from the front of the car, especially when cold. I took it to a local specilaist (45 miles away), who fixed the high pressure fuel pump leak by replacing 2 seals on the pump. The leak was fixed.

However, now whenever I try to accelerate hard on full throttle, the car MCSF ENGINE warning light comes on and the car loses power but is still driveable. This only happens on full throttle, and I can happy drive at 90mph when not accerating hard. The car was put on diagnostic machine by Alfa speciliast and the only code read was P0191 Fuel Pressure Ccontrol. Any idea what it could be? The specialist said that the car was over-boosting.
The alfa specialist has tried to clean some sensors, not sure which ones a few times now and still the problem persists. He said that they normally never have any issues with the diesel engines!!
I actually sold a BMW 320D which was great..but even after all these issues I love the Alfa. But I cannot afford to keep doing 90 miles round trips and the problem not getting fixed. Any ideas or solutions would be greatly appreciated.
One final thing, I think the car might have been re-mapped but not sure. During the test drive (which is what sold the car to me) the car was like a rocket in every gear - way faster than the BMW 320D. Not sure if this is relevant or not, as both myself and previous owner could not say for definite if it had been re-mapped or not.
Thanks for your time and all the best in the New Year.
Regards

Michael

If you suspect it has been remaped the best thing to do is get the ecu checked,it could be a bad file that is causing the problems(unfortunately we get a lot). The closest reputable firm near you is DNAtuning.
Contact them ,mention we send you and they will read your ecu file and tell you if is original or modified.

When was the fuel filter last changed? I was getting the same error code as you and a full service sorted it out

oh and get yourself a copy of alfadiag that way you can read your own error codes (and do rudimentary fault finding too ... )

Thanks guys for your advice.
Hope everyone had a great xmas and New Year.
Mine was spent on the side of the M6 in the freezing conditions when the serpentine belt and pulley snapped!
At least wife and baby got home safely, but Alfa is still somewhere in Manchester and cannot be taken to garage until 'God knows when'.
Really loved the car on test drive and drive home...now seriously out of pocket, and really left in the lurch due to the 156!!!
Didn't realise owing an Alfa was going to give this much pain!!

Hi Alfa Tuner,

That is a very good question! The car broke down on Saturday 2nd January at 5pm. Egertons recovered us and took me to Lymm truck stop? Jct 20 M6, and promised to get the car to me on Saturday in Warwick. However, it is now Wednesday 6th and the Alfa is still in there yard!
Will keep your details in hand from now on..I use M6 a lot going backwards and forwards to Glasgow...with the luck I have had with the 156..think I may have more issues!!
Thanks again for your quick response.
Regards
Mike
