8V JTD turbo upgrade (300HP OM642 turbo)

Some time ago I decided to upgrade my turbo. I had quite clear vision of the choice - GTB2056VK from current 210HP 159s and Breras.

I spent few weeks by searching some reliable local supplier capable to deliver 159's GTB2056VK turbo and another week and half waiting for the delivery. Then at the day D, I opened the shipment and spotted shiny new 200HP 159s BorgWarner/3K BV50 turbo. I gave my supplier call and as no other supplier was capable to deliver GTB2056VK and the currrent one gave me quite pretty discount for his mistake, I decided to keep it and give a try.

So here it is. Externally is this BW/3K turbo completely the same as Garrett's GTB2056VK. So you can use this guide for GTB upgrade as well.

From the pictures it's quite clear that adopting will require a lot of work, at least due to complete different compressor housing.

Starting with exhaust manifold flange

Porting exhaust manifold is the easier part. Although the stock turbo has rectangular flange with oval hole and BW squared with circular hole, the flange width is the same, so it's only about to make the screw holes slotted. Few hours of filling (both turbo and manifold screw holes) ...

... and turbo perfectly fits the exhaust manifold

I've just finished byte-to-byte analysis of the whole ECU data section and raised those few abandoned single value limiters.

16v pump installed ?
Not yet. 16V pump, camshaft and other upgrades are still ahead.

Still less than 450Nm and more than clutch likes, I suppose ;-)

#45 ·
Not yet. I'll be doing all the upgrades at the same time on late August. I'm still waiting for the 6speed gearbox.

I'll probably have no chance to dyno the BV50, but according to Laster logs and his dyno results, I suppose those 110mm3/i @4500 should do 230+ HP.

Great job!!! 110mm3.. Buff

How much for tune my file??? :)

I don't think it will be an easy fit. Also suppose that compressor/turbine wheel trim will be different.

Btw. I'll release my BV50 turbo kit for sale soon

Finally I started to work on GTB2056V upgrade. As usually, I'll guide you through this process pic by pic.

Image

Picture 1 - due to bigger compressor housing and tighter bend (comparing to BV50), inlet had to be cut part by part

Image

Picture 2 - Inlet hems (or reinforcements) need to be removed

Image

Picture 3 - Drilled out and grinded - not the nicest, but works fine

Image

Picture 4 - Inlet outer diameter of 51mm

Image

Picture 5 - Dry fitting test - not the final hose yet.

Actually, it's 57mm dia MGP or so I think. It's spare ellbow (from JS JTD FMIC kit) previously fitted to butterfly throttle. But it's attached to the compressor housing only for testing purpose to see if there is enough space and access to the belt retainer.

Nice!
Isn't 51mm inlet kinda small?
Mine is 57mm (2256v)

This gtb2056 should be such a nice upgrade for my 20v! Even exhaust fits on directly!
Still got one laying around... ;-) itchy!
It's just the neck. there will be 51->80mm reductor attached to the compressor inlet.

So, what are you waiting for! ;-)

do you have another transmission then we do?

Little progress - sanded (upto 600 grade) compressor intake ...

Hi, nope, BV50 still works fine. But GTB2056VK spools faster and is capable of a bit higher airflow. So it's time to fully unleash the power of the engine with upgraded clutch and drivetrain.

Hi!
KKKBV50 currently runing in my GP
1'9 bar @ 2400-4000 rpm
1'8 bar @ 4500 "
1'7 Bar @ 4750

Can I keep spooling at 1.9bares up to 5000rpm? I'm going to upgrade exhaust system 57mm without midle silencer/catalyst and a forge intercooler (40% more flow). I think if I raise a little bit the boost I could smoke less since currently its smoking a bit.
how many hp do you expect with the gtb2056vk?

#60 · (Edited)
Yes, you can keep 2bar upto almost 5000rpm with BV50 on 8V JTD, but you need quite big IC as the compressor efficiency drops slightly (intake temperature raises).

I don't await the GTB2056VK to bring much more HP (approx. +10HP comparing to BV50), but 2bar boost @2000rpm already (=more low down torque) and better efficiency at higher rpm.

I'm aiming for about 250HP thanks to upgraded camshaft, ported head, 1700+ bar fuel pressure and upgraded water pump/engine cooling.

Looks fine, althought will be quite a tight fit I think. Actually I have this nine core one.

I do not plan W/M at least not for now. There is still some space for conventional ways.

Straight intake dry fitting test. Notice the airbox cap - the air filter will be enclosed within the airbox with the fresh air supply from the fog light opening.

#64 ·
That looks great!

verry promising - what samco have you used to compensate the slight offset from compressor inlet to Airbox?
i'd like to do the same on my car verry much but could not jet find anything fitting.

BS

Thanks! It's 51->63.5mm 45° reductor (straightened to ~25°), 63.5mm dia ALU pipe and 63.5->80mm straight reductor. Airfilter, airbox cap and MAF are from GTA.

BV50 vs GTB2056 - important fact: EGR port to comp housing outline distance is about 2cm longer on GTB

first try - turbine housing shifted at exhaust manifold - shifted turbine & modded gearbox housing (compressor housing doesn't touch the gearbox)

Good work!
The advantage of a 8v exh manifold is the flange that has approx. the same width as the GTB's turbine flange. So you have more area to shift.

With the smaller 16v turbine flange you cannot shift that much as 1 bolt hole will overlap the GTB turbine intake hole. So I resolved that by rotating the complete turbo a few degrees on the exh manifold.

Looking forward to your results!
