They are taking it into arnold clark alfa to check for damage as im not sure how much oile was lost over the 6 mile commute

Looking at the state of the oil, are you sure they actually changed the oil/filter?

And if you've lost a substantial amount of oil, you will be very lucky if no engine damage has occured. May not be apparent now, but it may be several thousand miles down the line.

Sorry, don't have much sympathy for anyway foolish enough to take their Alfa Romeo to this utterly incompetent chain of idiots.

There is nothing thicker than a kwik fit fitter.

I hope your cover was dirty to begin with :(
But get the car checked over ASAP, but check how much oil actually left the car first, hopefully it is less than one litre.

As soon as I smelt it I pulled over and stopped the engine. Car was put on a transporter and taken back. In all fairness the manager has been ace. He had it booked in to be checked on friday and will fit the bill for ANY damage.

From Kwik Fit to Arnold Clark, thats like out of the frying pan and into the fire!

You should take it to McLennan's garage in Loanhead instead, they will know what they need to look for.

At a minimum I reckon you should drop the sump and change the big end bearings, why not if Kwik Fit are picking up the bill.

The correct thing to do is such circumstances is to leave the engine to stand for a few minutes then carefully measure how much it takes to top up to the maximum. You will then know how much was lost and can assess how long the engine possibly ran for with a dangerous oil level. A small amount of oil makes a big mess on top of an engine, I'm finding it hard to believe that splashes out of the filler cap would lose enough in 6 miles to get to the point of engine damage.
It's probably far too late to find out now, I'm guessing somebody just marched up and put some oil in it. Short of doing what Pud said I can only think that a specialist could do an oil pressure and compression check.
Personally I've never seen an engine damaged in such a way and I've seen a lot of filler caps left off for a lot longer than six miles believe me.

I think Alfafamily has a point.. It looks like the oil hasn't got much further than the cover in the photo. It wouldn't take much to cover that; certainly less than 1 litre.

Still I'd get them to foot the bill for a full check especially if they can't prove how much oil was actually lost.

Hope you get it sorted bud

I left one off my old 156 V6 once

Bit of a mess, but no significant drop in oil level...

I used a lid off an aerosol can as an 'emergency' cap

I dont mind it going to arnold clark... they have sorted a few of my alfas when they have been hit and done a good job

That's a good point. Take a look at the filter to see if it's been changed. Kwikfit won't have a genuine black one (with the part number stamped on it), they tend to use aftermarket stuff like unipart.

Taking a look at the pic again, the oil looks absolutely filthy!

I smell a rat, a big one, and it's getting bigger:lol:
