Why is the spark plug change so short for the 1.4 engines

The 1.4 engines have scheduled spark plug changes at 30 000km intervals. The plugs are iridium and very expensive. I was quoted $45 each here in Australia but I ended buying a set from ebay for my MA coming from England for half that price including delivery. My point is that these are iridium plugs and in some other cars will go for at least 100 000km. Even the 1.7 Alfa engine has intervals which are longer than the Alfa 1.4 engines (both TB and TBMA). The manual says that for MA engines to stick rigidly to the schedule. Is there any reason why these 1.4 engines should have such short intervals? My car is just at 30kkm now and I took out a plug to check and it looks good.

I understood 30km intervals but see that as overkill?

I do recall seeing somewhere that intervals are every 2 services (I.e.60km) Either I confused it with the air filter or it was written somewhere and then changed.

Oil on the other hand, I'm happy with changing as frequently as feasible.

I know that replacing the air filter (with a new OEM part) can sometimes have 'noticeable' effects ".

Out of interest, does anybody notice the impact of a new set of spark plugs after 30km?

From 2014
All MultiAir (1.4 Giulietta /Mito) and 2.0 (Giulia) and TwinAir 0.9 (Mito) engines, need every 18,000 miles / 30,000 km new Plugs,
and every 9,000 miles / 15,000 km new oil / filter.

Probably because of the total variable intake valves, the Plugs will have a hard time??

Interesting that Alfa changed from NGK spark plugs at a similar point in time.

if 60k is too much, but the basic intervals are 30k apart, you default to 30k changes. Even if what they really wanted is 50k intervals for the plugs. I see a lot of that when the oil change intervals change, the rest of the components change just has to follow suit (but hardly never get extended intervals).

More ethanol content in the fuel could have an impact aswell.

Got my spark plugs changed yesterday at around 60k km and must say she runs smoother than before, happy I got them done.

On a side note, my garage did tell me that after they came out he visually could see that they really needed to be changed and also said that were sort of loose as they came undone quite a bit easier than normally. Who knows 60k might be a bit too long or the previous owner/garage faked the service history. :paranoid:
