I would also like the caveat that last post with the fact that if cost is/was an issue (and it always is) then I would go the short block 2JZ route and annoy everyone

I would choose the turbo and supercharged lancia delta s4 engine and place it instead 3.2 to keep the four wheel drive system. The rally ones had around 500 bhp so should be entertaining and whatva soundtrack you'd have

the 1750 does a decent job, but lacks the displacement to give any immediecy to the driving experience

Slightly sacrigligeous, but the Audi 2.5 TFSI 5 pot would give a great combo of enough displacement, torque, power & sound

Volvo engines are magnificent... I would love to have a 159 with the 2.5 inline 5 turbo from volvo (the one that is in the mk2 focus rs&st).

And RWD.

That would be fun.

I think the 159s 1750, being the first edition, was toned down.

I still believe if they'd launched the 159/Spider/Brera with the 1750
and then uprated it to the performance now seen in the Giulietta QV
over the cars' lifespans then they'd have been more successful.

The platform need a minimum of ~200BHP. There's no getting away from that.

I would go for the 1750TBi which is 200 BHP.

I was coming out of the 159 Ti 2.2TJS and was originally looking the 3.2 Brera, then a few Brera II (which I've purchased) came up for sale, looking at like for like spec (in my opinion, which I'm sure others may disagree!), the 3.2 had a higher top end and does sound better, but the running cost of the 1750TBi was much better all round including the performance for everyday driving..

Definitely much love for the Brera Independent here.

Nice choice Dalewis.

Not sure what you get on yours with a full tank but mine was 200 miles with the V6.

Thanks Classico, its a lovely looking car when cleaned

I actually work from home so don't do many miles and I don't think I've ever filled the tank! I think I get around 26-30 MPH..

How about a good old 2.5 V6 Busso instead of the 2.2 JTS? I doubt it would be much more thirsty and surely the sound would be much better.
 Good call. Would've been a decent car if they'd installed that over the 2.2...

This Mofo;

V12 lovelyness

Or a 1750TBi tuned to within an inch of its life. My 3.2 V6 always felt underpowered, I've never hit the limiter so much in life.

Cheers

The Brera chassis is quite a departure from Alfa’s of the recent past and is built and I do mean built, this chassis is easily capable of taking 400bhp. Suspension components are twice the size of the out going GTV and even with the present 260bhp the chassis never gets flustered, it merely does exactly as you tell it, there are non of the exciting moments you get in a GTV 3.0 either, it is just crying out for more power. Looking at the design of the chassis in terms of bushes and fixtures it also appears to be designed to last, these parts look well engineered and at least of the same quality as there rivals but only time will tell in this department. Alfa have well and truly sorted out the corrosion issues with no model produced in the last 15 years showing any hint of corrosion.
From Alfa Romeo Brera Review

Maserati 4.7 V8

If I won the lottery I would do this before anything else!

Clearly not talking about floorpans or subframes were they!!!!

Although my GTV is fairing v v well

They should have used a turbo petrol as the base engine really. They could have used the 2.0 20v turbo from the Fiat Coupe, these blocks can also be taken upto 2.4L with a longer stroke crank (from Stilo 2.4). A 250bhp, 2.4L 20v turbo engine would have been perfect and no need to buy engines from Vauxhall. Can't imagine it would have been worse on fuel than the 2.2, maybe on paper but definitely not in the real world.

Or if they were sticking with the Vauxhall idea, why not use a Z20LET or Z20LEH ?
