Just when I was enjoying my 166 I find a massive puddle of water in the rear left Hand footwell! We have had a lot of rain in north staffs over the past two days which hasn't been fantastic anyway.

I have changed the pollen filter last week but the foam seal on the filter housing doesn't seem great. I took it out and the filter was wet only at the bottom which may indicate that water is coming in from the bottom of it. I took part of the scuttle panel off last night and had a quick look around. To my amazement there was a small pool of water just to the left of the pollen filter housing!! Does anyone have any idea what is causing this? I really love the car but water leaks dampen the spirit!!!
Could it possibly be a blocked drain hole? I'm Guessing it is this as there is still water floating around in there. It is strange how only the left side is wet but not the right.

If anyone has any info or a fix for this it would be greatly appreciated!

Regards, tricolori

Sooooo, i've had a look at the situation.......

I took the scuttle panel off but there is this box in the way next to the air con pipes.
When i turned my heater on today it was making a slushing sound like a washing machine, which may suggest there is water in the system.

Does anyone know, at all, where these drain holes are located??? I'd imagine they are close to the pollen filter. I have done a search but can't seem to find any pictures either. Someone must know!!!!

Right, little update.......I called Alfa workshop and asked I they knew anything. They said the only issues they know of are the seal between the door pad and the door or the drain holes. They said the drain holes are located either side of the pollen filter. Apparently leaves and crap can settle here. Not sure how leaves can settle there when there is a scuttle panel. But we shall see. Just need to know where exactly these drain holes are located now!! I can't find and literature or pictures on the tinterweb!!??!

Hi

My 166 was leaking from the rear screen and that caused puddles in the back. If you can get a finger under the lip of the screen and gently lift it away then it will have de-bonded and need refitting. Not an expensive job, think I paid 40 quid last year. As for the water in the pollen filter I also had that problem, but was cured by having the air con regassed!! Don't know why it suddenly stopped the filter filling with water, but it did. I also couldn't find the drain holes under the scuttle panel and had the gurgling sound you mention that turned out to be a lack of gas in the aircon. I am now realising that the 166 is a "real" Alfa, despite the Fiat bits. It certainly has a mind of its own and waiting for the next problem is all part of the joy of ownership!!

Well the guy who I bought it off, St George Alfa in yate, told me he had re-gassed the air con. Can't trust anyone these days. Would this explain why I am getting a strong whiff every now and again as I have just replaced the pollen filter. Still going to search the drain hole theory so if anyone can help that Would be great. Seems a competent car altogether though. Hope It can be sorted out soon!

Mine also had that musty smell from the air vents and the windows kept misting up. Don't know where the gas in the air con went, but had it regassed (May 2012), and it has worked perfectly since. I do change the pollen filter regularly, and they can be bought cheaply off Ebay. Like you I bought the car with these problems and the garage I got it from were not very helpful to say the least. I've had mine for just over a year and have sorted most things, but some just begger belief! The rear passenger door central locking has a mind of it's own and works when it feels in the mood, and the windscreen wipers come on when it's dry, but not when it's raining! Still love the car though, well worth the effort in the end!

I'll have to get it re-re gassed then! :cheese:

I don't have the same issue with the door lock. Mine is the facelift (2004) version. My wipers seem quite good actually. i had a 159 before this and those auto wipers were useless. I'm not so sure about the two wiper arms on the drivers side wiper. Just no need i think.
I love the car too although i will love it more when it has it's front brakes done, (with pads) thermostat, maf sensor, new air filter and ecu/ throttle reset done!!! :p

Must get to the bottom of this water ingress issue though. i believe another cause is possibly a grommit on the passenger side, under the scuttle panel. mine looks as if someone has cut the centre of it out and left a thread showing which protrudes out through the bulk head.

I'm still scanning......

Did you get any further with this Tricolori?

Similarly to you - i replaced the pollen filter - foam seal was a bit shot and repositioned it as best I could. (I also vacuumed out the pollen filter housing etc and there was no sign of dampness in that area).

I can't say for sure but it "seems" since then water has been getting in - the car is parked flat.

sorry for late reply! I have just got back from glastonbury but it is still work in progress. I have spoken to platts alfa in stafford and stoke to try and source a rubber/plastic grommet that might be the culprit. Basically, mine has been cut in the centre and it also hasn't been replaced very well. The grommet is located under the scuttle panel on the passenger side. I "think" that if the car is parked up-hill then the suspension turret fills up with water and then enters past the dodgy grommet.

Problem is, I'm still waiting for a reply from alfa for nearly 2 weeks now. They can't seem to find the grommet on their system for me to purchase. I'll attach a picture or two so everyone can understand what i am on about.

There should be below in the bottom of that area another oblong grommet and next to it a small drain hole.

You could fit a plastic or metal disc and apply silicone sealant to seal / attache it.

DO you get the impression it is not a priority for them Tricolori?

In my case the grommet you show was indeed intact with some very sticky black resin which doesn't seem to dry - (I should have worn gloves)

If I recall correctly there isn't a rectangular grommet in there just a rectangular hole ! Paul O - you may just have pointed me in the right direction :) thank-you. Will check later

Finally managed to take a look tonight - yup - there is no grommet over the rectangular hole. The smaller drain hole is clear.

So should I blank off the rectangular hole with something and silicone? leaving the smaller hole clear?

water in footwell

With all the rain recently noticed water in the rear footwell. On closer inspection the front is wet to. found the round bung had been cut exactly the same.

the drain hole was also blocked.

all fixed now I'll see if it gets wet next time it rains; I'm sure I won't have to wait long for that to happen
