Hi, I have a Alfa 147 (05 reg) JTD. I have just started it and got the error message 'water in diesel filter' error message. I have done a bit of searching on the site and I think it may be down to using diesel from a different fuel station to my usual one, I filled up on Friday and got the message today (Sunday). Also I had the car serviced 10 days ago and they ticked the 'fuel filter' box so I presume that they changed it. I cannot face being without the car while they check it in the garage (3 kids to get to school!) so I am thinking that I may just ignore it and put it down to the different diesel? Any advice greatly appreciated.:confused:

I've just changed my fuel filter this afternoon. A simple job, so there is no reason why the garage may pull a fast one.

Did you go from a quality fuel (BP/shell) to using supermarket when you filled up on friday?

Does the code on your dash mean that you're supposed to put a new filter in, or just empty it, or do something else??? ...does the handbook give any instruction?

It may just be the case that you have let the tank run a little lower than usual. And water may have collected over time in the tank. Usually there is a tap on the bottom of a diesel filter for such a reason. Have a look, and if there is like a wingnut or large screw in fitting in the bottom, then just drain it a little.

It takes a very small amount of water to trigger one of thse sensors. Most diesel cars have them fitted now.

if its the same type of filter as my GT, there is an electrical connector in the bottom of the filter than can be unscrewed to enable it to be drained. In fact this is probably the sensor to tell if there is H20 in it!

..probably worth draining the filter.

I went from Shell to Esso on Friday. The only thing the handbook says is to go to my nearest Alfa specialist (seems to say that for most warning lights though!). I think I will carry on as normal and go back to shell the next time I fill up. The only other thing I can think of is I used some of that redex diesel treatment a few weeks ago and I think it maybe about 4 years old, or maybe i am just grasping at straws??
