My apologies for rehashing a well discussed topic, but after reading a lot of information about the amount of oil the M32 gearbox takes I am confused.

Today, among other things, my mechanic changed the oil in my 159 TBI M32 gearbox. He says he drained the gearbox and refilled it with 2 liters of oil.

All the information I read on the forums points to the M32 gearbox taking 2.3 liters, with some people overfilling it to almost 3 liters. Most people say they filled it with about 2.2 to 2.4 liters.

Now, the 2.3 liters number could be for a fully empty gearbox, as if you drain it, there should be around 0.2 liters left in it, so my mechanic putting back 2 liters would make sense. I guess he filled it to the oil level check plug.

But, what confuses me even more, is that if I look at the manual that came with the car, for the TBI engine a 2 liter amount of gearbox oil is listed, for the 1.9 JTD, which should have the same gearbox it says 2.3 liters. My mechanic also showed me a chart in his shop saying that the TBI takes 2 liters of gearbox oil.

I would just like to be clear, is the 2 liters for a TBI with an M32 gearbox enough, and why is there a difference in the official documentation for seemingly the same gearbox.

In my old 159 1.9jtdm i drained ahd filled it with 3L of oil, no pressure in the box or any oil blown out of the breather, I ran it for about 30k miles like this with no issues.
Standard fill was 2.3L

The filling bung is right in the top so I'm not sure what you mean by fill to the level plug, 3L is way below the top, probably only half way down

I've just changed mine, had the car on ramps for easier access and to get as much oil out as possible, I drained 2.6L out so the previous owner had obviously already changed it, but as the level plug is really awkward to get to I just refilled with 3 quarts of MT90 (about 2.8L)
All info gained from this forum.

Had my 159 TBi Gearbox rebuild with new bearings at Alfa Romeo dealer. When asked how much oil they used the answer was "the recommended 2l"
After a short "break in" I emptied gearbox, and 1.9l was drained.
I refilled with 3.0 liter Fuchs Titan Sintofluid 75w80, which was recommended by Ned from Autolusso.
Maybe 2.8-2.9l would've been fine since you can't get it all out just by draining.

Did mine yesterday. Drained it fully and then added 3 litres. The old stuff that came out was red! I noticed a difference straight away, even when shifting with the engine off, much less notchy than before. I highly recommend doing this for any M32 owner.
