having said that, the serated bit look like a cambelt, its what its sitting on I cannot get

 

I reckon it is part of the selector mechanism from inside the gearbox.

 

It's sad but SE is the closest, can you name which and what model car?

Its a Triax. My Fiat 127 had those.

 

99% sure it is the tri-pod joint with the bearing removed.

 

Tripod is the other name for a Triax.

ZF, I think its the inner joint from a range of puntos, 145 etc.
