Reverse Parking Sensors - retrofit

Because the supplying dealer carelessly neglected to order RP sensors on the factory (MA TCT - Sept 2012 build) I am having to fit an aftermarket system. Looks like I'll be doing it myself because of the apparent impossibility of finding anyone in central/SE England who has already done it on a G :wow:

BTW, I know for a fact that the factory system cannot be retrofitted.

Does anyone know where best to connect in the electrics, presumably somewhere on the reversing light wiring, maybe there's already a connector in the loom under the boot lining?? Probably too much to hope for anything so simple??

Alternatively, can anyone recommend a competent person/outfit who I can trust to do the job?

Mine predates the standard fittment to Lusso later in 2011 and I don't mind . The ones on our multipla have got damp in them or something and only work on hot days . So, why get more to go wrong?
I've got so used to parking sensors, having had them on my Fiat for the last 9 years decided it would be a must have for the Giulietta.

Checked the dealer catalog and noted they're standard on the Lusso - then looked out for a Lusso with a few other nice feature and promptly bought one.

Driving it home and then reversing into my driveway nearly ran into the front of my Fiat  and thought "What the hells wrong with the reversing system !" Got out the car to check the back end and at that point realized I didn't have any

Think in my case I'm just going to have to drive a little more carefully though as hearing after market buzzers would only remind what an idiot I've been

Our Freelander had factory fit, worked really well.
Our other car (Fiesta) has retrofitted system, works less well than factory fit but still v. useful.
Personally, I'm used to them, find it's possible to reverse park much more confidently and quickly in tightish spaces.
So I do want to do this but it must be done by someone who knows what he is doing (even if that someone is myself, assuming that I can get competent technical advice concerning the wiring before I start)

I did it! The biggest problem is trying to find the positive lead to the reversing lights: they are both grey and come down the rear three quarter panel! You could take a lead up through the tailgate and connect to the lights themselves or check the cables with a tester where they are easier to get at in the offside corner of the car. Alternative I suppose is to get one of those canbus readers and connect it up to that - it'll cost more though!! I used the cobra slim ones and to date they've been great. If you're looking for the ones the dealers use there's a couple of sets for a Mito @ ÂŁ85 on eBay. Same things meta branded but Alfa

They charge ÂŁ150 painted & fitted at my local ford dealer. You do have to ask yourself if its worth the hassle at that price because removing some the trim can be a bit tricky.

OK, I can see that I'm going to end up doing this myself...hopefully it's the Cobra items which I'll be receiving.

Andypj, can you just clarify that it is definately not necessary to remove the whole bumper but only the black valence part - then I'll be able to see what I'm doing behind the bumper?? Yes?

And it doesn't sound as if much (any ?) interior trim needs to be removed? Or if trim removal is required, which trim removal tool / toolset should I buy?

Yes just the lower bumper panel. It's held on by three bolts at the bottom and about thirty plastic tangs all around the edge. I pulled mine off, but the bumper bent a lot Nd I think a
a trim removal tool would be more appropriate. All the wires went through the grommet for the number plate light, but you will need to remove the trim on the inside of the rear nearest the bumper (two screws and the rest are clips) and the offside trim to find the wiring loom and hide the electronic box.

Which tool?? I think I'd go for the ones that look like a set of pliers with forked feet so to speak. The set of levers, well you've probably got something like that around the house already.

Much obliged andypj. I'll post again in due course about how I get on.
I have to say, this is exactly the kind of quality input (and more in this case) that I joined this forum for i.e. real helpful, practical stuff.

I hate to be long-winded but could I bother you for three more pieces of info?
1. At what distance apart (centre to centre) did you install the two sensors above the number plate? There are no other Gs around here to look at and I'd hate to drill the holes only to find that there was some kind of obstruction behind the spots I chose?
2. The Cobra sensors seem to have to go in from behind the bumper (is that right? I'm only going from pictures at this stage) so I'm assuming that there is sufficient access to do that?
3. I haven't had a butchers behind the trim yet but your info on the other thread talks about 4 grey wires, two thick and two thin, then you talk about "both". Are we talking one of the thin or one of the thick wires to connect into? (I realise that I'll still have to probe to find the right one)

Measurements: I'll have to go and measure, but originally I used a picture and scaled it up. Basically the inner ones are are in the middle of the horizontal bar vertically, but at the end of the curve from the rise around the number plate and the outers are sort of on the flat part almost in line with the rear reflectors.

The cobra sensors I bought definitely fit from outside. There should be some pictures on the other post.

The wires, sorry i can't remember - it's a bit prod and see with reverse selected and the ignition on!

Wiring

Im thinking of fitting parking sensors, when it comes to wiring with the aftermarket items, are there any problems with splicing into the reversing positive wire & other wire to earth, i am hearing mention of possible requirement for a relay, or wire to ignition circuit due to canbus system, probably im lstening too much!!!!!.
Thanks

No relay or anything like that to fit (Depending if your fitting AR ones or not.) Only problem you will have is where you slice into the loom the wires are all the same colour so a bit of trial and error to find the reverse.

As I have mentioned on a number of occasions on AO I fitted aftermarket reversing sensors made by Nikkai, originally to the 147, which I then removed when I sold it and subsequently I fitted them to her indoors hatchback.

Excellent product which have not failed at all, in what must be now at least some eight years of use.

Cost back then? about ÂŁ19 or so iirc? :):
