filled up my Mito for the first time today and felt that i needed to put in the "special" unleaded...i didn't question it, but then thought...is this worth it? With fuel over the £ again, it didn't seem worth being tight if it will actually help.

What do others think?

I usually put in the super unleaded tesco fuel because it is only a small amount more expensive and I like to believe that it may be slightly cleaner than the regular unleaded and hence will keep the engine running better...

But then again, who knows if the super unleaded pump delivers exactly the same fuel as the regular unleaded? they could easily do that to squeeze extra profit..

You only need "super" unleaded if the car has been mapped to run on a higher octane fuel, my 230bhp Scooby is recommended and mapped at the factory to run on 95ron and has done with no problems at all, but the 265bhp Sti is mapped for 98ron or higher so thats what you need to stop pre-detonation. Top gear did a test a few years back and it made no difference to cars mapped to run on 95ron except to the owners wallet!

For the past few weeks I have been running my 155TB on either Ron97 Super Unleaded by Jet, Total & BP Super Ultimate and then running the fuel down low in the red zone....topping up with £5 V-power running it down low and then putting £40 V-power fuel in and then running on Shell V-power Ron 99

Now I don't think it is a placebo effect as the car is definately more powerful on 99RON over 97RON and it sounds slightly different...I don't know what normal unleaded would be like (RON 95), I've never put it in the car.

I will keep checking, I am pretty certain on RON 99 to turbo boost gauge stays on maximum longer, somedays I am sure I have observed that when running Ron97 fuel that either the boost gauge goes to max and comes back down quicker or it never quites makes maximum bars and stays on the one below...i have seen both of these things happen....I keep checking just it case of the placebo effect.

What we need is a rolling road print out for a 155TB for 95 unloaded, 97 Super Unleaded and 99 Very Super Leaded. :)

that would be your choice.... Both Shell V-Max and Tesco's Super Unleaded are 99RON...check with tesco's they have the 99RON sticker on. The downside of having your car permanently mapped to that is it is only Shell and Tesco's offer this. Although the SHell Garage at Belmont, Durham, next to the A1 I am sure doesn't sell V-power which is mad.
