took the cam cover off to get the correct valve position/plug firing in relation to the tdc timing mark, also to poor some fresh oil in to it has something to turn over in. pleased to see that despite being stood for almost a year the smear of oil i gave it has prevented any rust building up

also wish i had cleaned off the debris from the refinishing as it is all under the vents, a bit awkard to get to now it has dried on :(

yes, sounds pretty good mecahnically mark, well pleased with that
quite a few things to still do though. the throttle linkages were just put on to get it running, off again now for cleaning and painting. the radiator i had re-cored has a leak  so that will be going back in the morning. the carbs i cleaned on the outside, but haven't taken the tops off so the jets etc will be dirty. the ingniton timing was done by ear/experience so needs doing. also while it was running i forgot to connect the brake vaccuum hose so that didn't help and the breather pipes were just blanked off :D
plenty of jobs still to do.

oil pressure ok though

thanks again guys
still plenty of bits to do on it, a few pieces were put on purely for the indulgence of starting the engine, they will come off again to be cleaned up

quite handy having an oil pressure gauge. cranking it over without the plugs in to build up the pressure and you could actually hear the tone change when the pressure built up just as the gauge registered it
such a relief that it all seems ok. can't wait now to get it all finished off so i can drive it ;)
it will be off the stands next weekend so i can try the clutch/gearbox so fingers crossed for that :D .
nice that all my wiring seems to have paid off, everything seems to work so far

BRAVO , what a great sound. Try some lighter fuel into the butterfly with engine running.

Great progress kev:thumbs:

Are you a dab hand with balancing the carbs? I remember it being quite fiddly, especially without a manometer set so you can make a direct comparison between all 4 chokes.

Did you do any specific mods to run it on unleaded? I presume you are running it on high octane unleaded.

I ran my S3 on unleaded for a while when it first came in (in those days there was only 2 star unleaded and wasn't the choice of super-unleaded), but I found the power drop-off, lumpy running and poor fuel economy wasn't worth the effort so switched back to running it on leaded until I sold it 10 years ago.

Keep up the good work:thumbs:

cheers

Ian
