... on my 159 ti 2.4jtdm.

And my word... :)

I would seriously recommend anyone thinking about it does this, as I'm sure most of those who read a forum like this would!

I also paid £50 for a before / after rolling road analysis, which in my opinion is absolutely vital; the tuning guy was able to see the power / torque output through the range and as a result spent a good couple of hours smoothing out the dip he could see I was getting at about 2000rpm. I now have about 45 extra BHP and a lovely smooth continual power delivery that starts from lower down and just keeps pulling! :)

I also spent a week before I had it done making a note of the mileage / fuel consumed to work out my mpg - am looking forward to seeing if it's made any difference. I'm quite sure it has just from driving it for a few days and looking at the trip computer, but will wait to see what the petrol gauge says.

On another note - had it done at Proalfa in Watford (in between Watford and Rickmansworth). I cannot recommend them highly enough. Cost me £450 all in, including the new pipe they made and fitted in replacement of the DPF - but the best part was the care and attention they gave me. They even showed it me under the car and gave me the DPF in a box to stick in the garage! (I thought it might be useful when I come to sell the car). I also had a meeting with the tuning guy to talk about how far I wanted to push the mapping, pros, cons, his recommendations, etc.

I was that impressed with them for it all, along with not charging me for fitting of a replacement inner wheel arch that I mashed against a rock, that I gave them 6 bottles of port to say thanks :p

Anyway - just thought I'd share

If an aggressive map is loaded on to the Qtronic the auto gearbox gets confused apparently, so needs to be held back a bit. proabably around 230bhp and 360Lbs I imagine which is still pretty good.

In terms of strength, the Qtronic box is actually rated for 30lbs more torque than the gearbox of the manual

Brera Tuning at ProAlfa

I've used Proalfa a few times and always found them very good and not too expensive. They identified a lack of decent but affordable Alfa servicing around the Watford area a few years back.

What sort of figures did you settle on for the remap?

I had my Brera, now sadly gone, done by Red Dot Racing (formerly in Watford but now in Enfield I think) back in 2007 and they did a great job of it. I seem to remember I got 245bhp after the remap..

@smudge_don: just google "proalfa", their contact details are on their website. Graeme is the guy who runs the place and is clearly an enthusiast who takes pride in his work, which is always very pleasing to know. The tuning place next door can't accommodate 4WD vehicles though unfortunately - only one set of rollers. I actually asked him about it (because I used to have the Audi A3 3.2V6 quattro) and he said he doesn't work on 4WD vehicles at all.

@Razzler: I certainly got the impression they've got experience - they talked me through the whole procedure beforehand, including the meeting with the tuning guy who talked about what he'd done in the past, what he'd recommend etc. I've got a manual box - not sure if there's any difference to doing it with an auto.

The other thing I'd point out is that they said they could push the remap much higher if I really wanted to, but they didn't recommend it - I would lose all the MPG savings and the car would smoke much more, as well as place much more strain on the physical components that are not designed to be running at such higher torque levels (for example, the clutch). So I was very happy (and impressed) at how knowledgeable they seemed when it came to giving me what I think is an all-round optimised map - more torque, more power, smoother running, better MPG, not smokey and not straining the physical components of the car.

@t3yls: definitely. I was hanging around till about 6.30pm waiting for them to finish - the tuner kept wanting "just one more run" to check he was happy with the outputs! Was quite happy to wait as it meant getting something he was happy with.

@dc & hessian: I was getting about 184BHP before the remap - something I was very surprised about. They explained that the quoted BHP figures are often a little "massaged" when they come from the factory - I'm sure they have lots of caveats about achieving the supposed 210BHP that it's supposed to deliver. Anyway, after the DPF removal and EGR delete the remap gave me just under 230 BHP, so a big difference from before.

I can't remember the torque figures to be honest, but I've got the printout of the torque and power graphs at home - I'll scan it and post it later so you can see the difference.

In summary I'm absolutely delighted with the result and they've definitely got a customer for life (well, whilstever I've got an Alfa at least!)

I am pleased on two counts firstly that you got a good deal and great service and secondly no one as yet hijacked the thread saying how good Aidie and Gus are at AHM/ Alfatune :)))

I think this post proves there are many good tuners out there that dont charge the earth £450 sounds great and they cared about their work.

Might be worth a day out for many more of us!

One of my good friends uses Proalfa for all his servicing/maintainance etc (159 / 147) and said he couldn't praise them enough!

Would love to see the results from a manual 2.4 they've done... great price though!

Interesting, was the map done by Tune4Performance? Tony is a great tuner, very professional, he was the one I was going to use for this. Nice to see some good gains :)

Was indeed done by Tony, very impressed - he really seemed keen to get the best result for me. Assume they're the guys next door to proalfa? It was all sorted via them so didn't pay much attention to the tuning shop's name.

Like I've already said, that pleased with the result and the price that I took them a bottle to say thanks! :)

At the risk of seeming to jump to the defence of Alfatune and others who use the map and pipe developed by Gus & Adie, the cost of the work is based on quite a few things, I have experience of such things as i work in product devleopment and used to work in automotive fuel systems development. You have to take all these and other factors into account:

1. Development time spent was over 12 months i belive (this has a cost)?
2. How many 1.9 and 2.4 cars are actually in UK?
3. What percentage will have owners that would want/need this mod for there car?
4. What is the cost of the pipe and the labour time etc.
5. Being able to have the margin to drop prices (and yes to make a profit!) if you wish when other people come on to the market offering a similar service.

This is the same with any product, if you want to have it first then you tend to pay a higher price especially if it is potentially low volume. I should imagine the market for this mod has already peaked seeing as these engines have not been available for a while, so you have to take the chance that you will make your money back before moving on to the next thing... you cant comment on the cost based on the sum of the parts, which some people tend to do...

I dont like paying over the odds and feel that what I paid for was fair for the job that was carried out and the peace of mind it has given me.

I dont have an opinion on anyone elses conversion either, good luck to them.

I am not a frequent customer of Gus's he sorted my car when i had serious issues with DPF and EGR but because I live in Shropshire I dont use them for servicing (WAD)etc so I would like to think I am fairly unbiased and base it on the only bit of work they have done for me.

I was one of the first to have this done as my car simply didnt work properly with the DPF and EGR so for me it was a necessity not a luxury performance enhancement and as such I think it was a good investment....

Please note this is a personal opinion and not a rant.....

Just want to say that this wasn't intended as a dig or comparison in any way with any other Alfa tuning shops - I've got no experience of anywhere else - just wanted to share with the forum the good experience that I personally had.

We know Gimpo and you've done the right thing....

Its good to hear you have had a positive experience, this is what the forum should be about...

I was just responding to suggestions that people who have had positive experiences with well established companys have something to sell... well established companys will obviously have had more customers and if they are any good will have lots of positive comments by people who have used them and are pleased with what they have had done, just disappointing that this is misread as a negative sometimes..

Just for the record John - would you still pay £750 again or consider the £300-£350 options ? In these difficult times we all need to keep an eye on the pennies.

John my thoughts are based on several years of observation not just this thread or others recently posted
