Its all going wrong! Total power steering failure...

Well, after 6-7 mths of trouble free ownership from new, my Veloce's dashboard went fully up in lights on Monday night.

The main warning lights i got were for AST! failure and all associated systems with it (ESC, collision detection etc.). The car felt very heavy to steer and felt like pre-power steering era cars!

I called the Alfa roadside assistance team who diagnosed it as a failure in the power steering. Car was recovered and taken to a dealership to resolve.

Today i find out that they had ordered and fitted a new steering rack with the hope this would fix the issue but unfortunately it hasn't worked.

They've put the a request into 'head office' and are awaiting to hear back for some technical advice...

Anyone had anything similar?!

The scary thing is, what do you do if this happens when out of warranty.

If the franchised dealer can't even diagnose the fault, will a specialist fare any better?

With all those warnings at once I can't believe they even got as far as changing the steering rack. All those 'faults' aren't going to be real, so I'd have checked/replaced the battery and the checked the charging circuits. Usually when power steering fails on an Italian car, especially when it happens at the same time as multiple fault warnings, it's a battery problem - rather trivial compared to a full steering rack replacement!

When my battery went flat due to mistakenly leaving the parking lights on for a few hours, on jump starting the battery I got all these warnings mentioned by OP. AST, ESC, Gearbox voltage low etc etc. The fact that changing the rack did not fix it suggest it's an electronic fault. Looks like the garage has gone with the limited diagnosis by breakdown recovery perhaps? Have the forgotten the steering in the Giulia is electric and there is no hydraulic connection between the steering wheel and the rack?!!

I would hedge my bets on a electric problem mostly battery related that is becoming far too common. That might just, maybe explain the AST warning. Did they even check the stored errors and try a battery diagnosis first? Changing the rack seems extreme. God help the "authorized" dealers!!

I would suggest you ask to check the battery voltage and charging circuit. If that is ok, could be a sensor or electric system related to the steering is my next bet.

Did the OP ever find a fix for this as my Giulia has just done the exact same thing. Twice now!!!

Both after longish journeys, 50 miles. After limping it back to my garage for 50 miles with no power steering they fixed it by unplugging the wires to the steering column and the re plugging them. They test drove it 4 or 5 times over short distance and I also drove it after they fixed it for a short distance with no issue.
I then drove it for 50 miles. Got out of the car having turned it off, got back in, started it up and all the same errors as above picture came up and no power steering again 😡😡😡

looking for some answers please.
Thanks.

So we have just tested the battery with a voltage meter and it reads fine, we also used a little gizmo to put in the cigarette lighter and that also showed everything was fine.

Further to this after a couple of starts it has cleared itself of any errors. I give up. But I know whatever it is is only going to come back again.

So frustrating after years of good service.

I got all the same alarms last year and it turned out to be a faulty wheel speed sensor. The steering felt strange at low speed, but OK once on the move. It's recently happened again, but intermittently, and is due in at Mangos next week for investigation. As it comes and goes I suspect it might just be a bad connector somewhere.

Might be a different problem, but similar symptoms and this time around mine was random too. Fault was there when I parked up one evening, gone the next morning, only to reappear an hour or two later. Did about 150 miles up the M5/M6 with no problems, then it popped up again as I trundled through town nearing home. Hopefully they can pin it down on Wednesday and fix accordingly. Still tend to think it might be a bad connector, but we'll see and I'll let you know.

The OP in the thread below hasn't confirmed resolution yet but the garage identified the IBS sensor on the battery. Not sure if there have been other reports of IBS failures similar to the poor quality relays saga.

Some have resolved issues due to low battery charge by replacing the IBS sensor.

Hi all,

Well I dropped the car to the garage earlier and have written an email to them with everything I can think of and hints and tips from here.

My last Alfa (GTV V6) eventually had to go as it cost me an arm and leg over an electrical problem that nobody could ever solve.

Thanks for the help, if it does get sorted I will report back.
