Help! How difficult to change turbo?

hi all,
My 2004 JTD M-Jet is in the garage at the moment (whom I trust) and they tell me it needs a new turbo (apparently turbine blades have come apart).

They're quoting me £1500 fitted which is more than I can afford right now, and as my car is high mileage it doesn't make economic sense to spend this on top of the £500 I've already spent, although I couldn't bear going back to an ordinary car...

So... I've had a quote of £280 for a 2nd hand turbo (with 90 day warranty) or £480 for a recon from parts specialists.

How difficult is it for a 'handy' but 'amateur' mechanic to fit a turbo. Car isn't here so I can't check on it myself... are any outrageously unusual tools required? I have sockets, grips, axel stands etc. Does the radiator have to come out? I assume the engine block can stay put while doing this?

Please any & all help accepted gratefully! I don't want to give up the 147, but common sense & money is starting to dictate...
many many thanks
Matt

Getting a new one is a no-no, particularly for 1500 pounds. The best quote for a new one I've been getting has been around 750 EUR (guess about 600 GBP) on my 2.4 20v (the dealer wanted 1100 euros!). The 2nd hand price sounds reasonable and the fitting isn't apparently (note I never did it myself) extremely difficult.
However, I'd be quite worried about the "blades coming apart" phrase - if that did happen, there's a chance metal parts have been ingested through the intake and entered the engine. Any details on how it exactly happened?

Hi Airwave,
It's apparently the turbine blades that disintegrated, not the compressor blades, so at worst there'll be debris in the exhaust system. I know when it happened, but as I was limping home nursing a head injury after a mountain bike crash, I wasn't quite as alert as normal.... (and yes, it was a really bad day!)

As I can't see the car until tonight I'm a bit in the dark as to what caused it, but my first guess would be soot buildup (it's very high mileage and I didn't do the first 95k miles of these)
cheers

never done alfa turbo's, done loads of nissan turbo's and cosworths and rs turbos
as far as i remember from my jtd, looks not too bad seen worse, plenty of plus-gas overnight on nuts to help prior to removal, also warming torch for stubborn nuts,,
every turbo i have replaced i have always replaced oil feed pipe into turbo and once built i would prime turbo ie disable fuel pump prior to stripping so motor wont start but turns over on key

Removal and re-fitting the Turbo is not too difficult.

I have removed the Exhaust manifold and the connection to the exhaust pipe (3 Nuts).

And then taken the whole lot out.

Once you are ready to fit the new Turbo, Prime the New Turbo with oil from a syringe.

Do NOT fit the Turbo without Priming it! :tut:

Use a NEW oil feed pipe AND a new oil drain pipe.

If either of the pipes is blocked, your Turbo will be Toast in no time.

CHANGE OIL AND FILTER BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE!

Parts List;
46782812 Oil Feed Pipe £26.20
10261060 Washer X2 to engine £0.98
46782813 Oil Drain pipe £24.29
10260160 Washer X2 to Turbo £1.12
7762642 - STUD £3.93 X4
55192175 - NUT £1.71 X7

Parts in this list are for a 10 Valve, March 2001 JTD.

Studs, Nuts and bolts should have not changed too much, but I would make sure when ordering parts by suppling the VIN.

That might give you some pointers.

All the best

Most likely..

...bearings collapsed:

Inducer(widest part of the Turbine wheel) touches the housing..

Causes:

Old/ dirty Oil = almost "grinds" Bearing away :tut:

Oil feed pipe blocked= Bearing runs dry

Blocked Oil drain pipe(Turbo out, back into Sump) = Blows the Oil seals

Turbo Hose popped off = can lead to severe over-spin

(will not kill the Bearings straight away, but Death is pre-programmed)

Very rarely

Cheap Chinese Turbine wheels(made from Chocolate= Low Nickel contend) where used during re-build. :tut:

But that's more common on Petrol engine cars = More heat than Diesel exhaust fumes.

Severally damaged Turbo bearings can cause the Oil warning light to come on = reduction in Oil pressure at tick over.

Oil light goes off, once 1200 rpm are reached.

In most cases, the engine is not affected by the low(er then usual) Oil pressure.

If you don't drive it for too long after the Turbo wend.

With a bit luck, you are totally confused now:p

still

all the best

if journal bearing wear and one end fails so will the other as the shaft moving will put the compressor wheel closer to the comp housing and that alloy and soon damages

it the trubine/exhast end as gone, u would have heard the bits rattling and it will have been smokey as the oil gets into the exhaust
there will be a mess inside if thats happened and turbo will more than likely be scrap. we test the to destruction at work and believe me there a hell of a mess when the turbine end fails

Hey guys, thanks for the info. just back from hols (yeah... why do expensive things always go wrong at times like this...)
I'll give it a go myself & try to make a 'how to'. Hopefully that way you can tell me what I've done wrong, and in the end we can make a guide for anyone else to try.
Cheers

please help!!!

My 2004 Gt it has done 145k miles broke down today first the low oil pressure display came on but then dissapeared I knew the turbo was slowly going for a few weeks but after about 10 minutes from motorway driving all of a sudden loads of smoke and a few jolts so i quickly pulled over and the car just died, I tried to restart but it would not startit will turn over thou.

Now I'm just worried how much damage the turbo may of done to the engine any ideas??
or should I just buy a recon turbo and see if it starts??

Thanks

Is there any oil left in the engine?
