headlight and reverse LED recommendations

hello all,

firstly apologies for starting another LED thread, however the ones i have seen are 5 years old now and LEDs seem to have moved on a bit.

I would like to replace my headlights (H7) and reverse light bulb (382) with LEDs to give a brighter result.
Can any of you recommend some products that you may have used or know fit and work well?

Reads like i should avoid any with fans, so alu or copper heat sinks?
any help appreciated :thumbu p:

thanks

I have a set of h7 LED from philips - stupidly expensive compared to other LEDS, but if you think of them in the same way as HID kits then they are more comparable....and better quality for sure. I like them, but I find them slightly too blue, they are 6000K as philips didn't do a 5000k.

A faff to fit because space is at a premium, but perfectly doable. They have a heat sink/fan built into one and a separate control module thing but its all straight forward and powers directly from the existing h7 electrics.

I'm not 100% sold on them purely because they create a slightly streaky pattern around the halo lights I have fitted, but thats not relevent if you dont have halos :p

I toying with whether to keep them or try and sell them on because of the streakiness which I dont get so much with halogen

Not got them in an Alfa but I recently fitted some to my x type (H1) and in all honesty I will probably be swapping them out again for night breakers or similar.
The light they put out is a nice bright white but they don’t seem to have the range of decent halogens,on unlit roads it’s almost like driving blind. cannot for life of me remebrr the make but they cost £70 so not cheap ones I don’t think.

I've switch driving lights and main beam to H7 LED's now and they are fine for everyday use.

The best H7 LED's are still not as bright as 55w HID's though, but they are brighter than any halogen I have ever tried, including night breakers and I don't get any streaking or broken beam patterns even with Halo's. I may yet switch main beam back to HID's but I kept blowing HID ballasts on my off side light so wanted to switch them out for a while to debug the issue.

For driving lights I am using these:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01I4MROB8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

For main beam I am using these:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/55W-6000...Lamp-Lights/272865644767?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

The driving light H7 LEDs I bought are quite long and just foul the dust caps on the back of the headlights so I had to cut 3" holes in the caps and fit large flexible grommets to allow a little extra space as well as allow for the cooling straps to come out of the headlight. I am going to try another set of the LED type I bought from China for main beam in the driving lights as they are a little shorter but according to the specs a little brighter.

No issues since moving to LED and everything works as expected.

hmm, wonder what's causing my streakiness then...they radiate out from from the light source visible on the road so I assume maybe the edges of the halos or something but perhaps not!

Different styles of led have different beam patterns by design as they are not like a traditional halogen bulb that is a 360 degree beam. I found that the LED orientation, i.e. horizontal vs vertical bulb alignment has a big impact. I personally align horizontally so the >< beam pattern fills out the light in front of the vehicle and doesn't streak

The LED types I linked to are both able to be orientated either way in the H7 holder bracket.

yes I noticed that.

I bought some (expensive but comparable to slightly pricer HIDs) philips ultinon H7 LEDs so definitely a good make and claim to have the right beam pattern etc (although tagged not for road use to cover their back). The instructions there say the 'blade' of the LED should be alight side to side, so that the LEDs chips face sideways...

I'll investigate with turning it and seeing if that cures the streaking...it is very odd and annoying as otherwise I'd love them. That said, got some HID in my dipped beam now and they look very nice.

I’m looking to upgrade the bulbs on the 159, tried already the Philips Xtreme Vision H7 but I’m not impressed at all, yes better than stock but nothing much.
I just came across these:

https://www.powerbulbs.com/product/philips-x-treme-ultinon-led-headlamp-h7

And I’d like advise if they can fit on the 159 and how. How and where would the ballast be fitted ? Can it go inside the headlight housing ? Or should it go outside, in which case what do you do? Drill the headlight back cover? Or?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Outside the headlight housing yes, ive a HID kit on, i guess its the same thing, drill through the plastic housing cover amd attach the ballasts to the cars wing or tie wrap to something if the reach isn't enough

These look amazingly expensive by the way

The powerbulbs.com site runs currently a 25% discount on everything that’s why I’m considering them.
I searched around but I get overrun by millions of different led kits and don’t know which one would be good to get, anyone that has tried one on their 159 that can point me to ?
As for drilling the headlight rear plastic cap (in case the ballast doesn’t fit inside it), doesn’t it affect the water tightness of the headlight ? Or can you use for example some hot silicone glue to close it off after you pass through the cables ?

P.S: when you fit LED headlights with ballasts, do the can bus give you error or not ?
