Clean your egr first ,normally air quantity errors on jtd are egr related.

I have just read your first post and by your description your MIL problems started with your egr valve,maybee its time for a new one, like i said before air quantity faults on jtd's are on standard ones egr related and in some lesser cases air sensor related.

thanks again everyone for your help. my car is now bed and breakfast at the local garage . they are going to ring an alfa main dealer tomorow for some more info. i would have taken it to a main dealer but the nearest one to me is a good 40miles away. the car started playing up just before xmass and i did not want to be stuck without a car over the hollidays. the local garage was my best option at the time . i would like to get it sorted asp as i am selling it , all though i have not advertised it yet (i have been out today looking for a new motor). it wont sell with engine light on and the motor system failure warning going off when you start it. as i said before the car seems to run perfectly. it has been one of the best cars i have ever owned. goes like foook for a diesel, good economy and is one of the best looking hatches on the road .

sory for the double post.computer is running a little slow, may be it needs a new egr valve:lol:

 

so is mine.... i think a new 'turbo' is required.

I am trying to solve a P1238 on my 156 JTDm

 

car is still running perfect, i never got it looked at msf is still showing when you start the car. car is due a service next week so i might have it looked at again. cheers simon

It's down to the EGR not fully closing, remove it and clean.

 

It was removed and cleaned 4 months (4000 miles) ago, would it need doing again in such a short amount of time?

 

The simple answer is yes

 

Had the same error on my 156 20V when I blanked off the EGR valve. Took out the blanking plate and everything was fine, so yes I would say it's EGR related.

 

I have been messing under the bonnet after work today and managed to remove the EGR, (with many thanks to ShiftyBloke's guide, nice one mate

Having looked at it, it does look a little dirty but not blocked as I would have thought.

I have taken some pictures for a second option, I'll clean it out anyway, but would this really be the problem?

I have also noticed a lot of black build up in the block connected with the EGR, will this need cleaning out as well, (although I'm not sure how this would be done :$).

Any thoughts / opinions would be great

did you check your wiring around fuel pump reset?

 

I have not checked the wiring yet, but have tested the fuel pump relay with a power supply and multimeter, that seems fine.

 

Fixed - For me error code p1238 - Air Quantity 2, was flagged due to a faulty EGR value.

Cleaned it using a guide on here, put it back, cleared error and all good.

Seems to run a lot smoother now as well thanks for everyone's help.
