Just wanted to know the difference between front and rear crankshaft seals I recently ordered a rear seal and think the one supplied is a front. dimensions are identical but material appears different . The one fitted to car is reddish brown on the surface and what appears to be brass at back of seal , seal supplied is black and has what appears to be a thin black coating over brass at rear of seal. Car is a 1999 gtv v6 any info would be appreciated.

From my experience with seals, does that colour difference not imply that the reddish brown one is a Viton rubber seal (superior) whereas the black one is a standard seal (inferior to Viton)?
Thanks for reply, I take it the Viton seal is more resistant to oil damage or of a sturdier construction and the black seal is not suitable for use as a rear crankshaft seal.
Viton seals tend to last longer and cost more. Both types do the same job.
Viton are also quite often factory fitted.
Viton seals will have the word Viton moulded into them somewhere usually.

Have found a Viton one at Alfa Workshop will order that and return other one many thanks for your reply
