Clicking noise from the engine

Hi All, I picked up a 2001 156 2.0 TS today and it seems to run beautifully. Its has 70,000 miles on the clock and has full service history (The cam belt was changed at 51,000 miles)
I have one concern, there is a ticking or clicking noise coming from the engine. It seems to be coming form the left hand side of the engine as you look under the bonnet.

Any ideas on what it could be?

Smaky could well be correct, the Injectors on the TS are pretty noisy, and they do tend to be more noticeable when the engine is hot and idling.

The other likely cause is a worn variator, if it has worn to the point that it is noisy all of the time it needs changing, which means a full cambelt and tensioners job as well.

Does the car sound like a diesel when it is first started? that is the classic symptom of a failing variator. They usually start sounding like a Diesel only at startup, and as they deteriorate they rattle all of the time. Performance economy also suffer at this stage.

The variator is located almost directly below the oil filler cap, so if thats where the noise is from it may well be that.

Hi everyone, I'm just reading these posts and starting to panic. I bought my 2003 1.6 147 in Feb. It had 28,000 on the clock. The service book shows that the 36,000 service was performed at 27,000. Apparently the cam belt was done, I'm not sure. Paranoid probably!!!!

Anyway, the current problem is the definite diesel sound upon start up.... If the cam belt was done in Jan 08, does that service include the variator. If not will my warranty cover this... P.s The dealer is Western Alfa in Edinburgh.

Many Thanks

Pauline

Thanks for the replies. I really hope it is the injectors and not the variator. I will check the noise of the car when I start it tomorrow. I didn't think it sounded like a diesel today but I will listen more closely in the morning and see can I pinpoint where the noise is coming from.

Thanks Smaky, Thats the first thing I will try. But when I started the car up this morning I have to say it did sound like a diesel engine or maybe i'm just worrying :(
I was always going to get the cam belt etc. changed but I just hoped it wouldn't have to be so soon.
On a happier note I spent the morning washing and waxing the car and it looks great :)

I'm based in Dublin and wonder can any of you offer advice. I bought my 2002 156 1.6 in march form a dealer and my warranty is out
on the 29th. I am bringing it in to them as I have the clicking sound from the left side of the engine and it seems
to be using a lot of oil. I have topped up but after a couple of weeks the oil light goes on when cornering and braking.

From what I have read, I am thinking that the cam belt may need changing. There are 76k on her but I do not know if the
warranty covers this... This is my first dealings with a car dealer and any advice here would be well appreciated.

Have to say though, love the new jammer!

If you're only checking the oil every couple of weeks when you know it's using it up, you're asking for trouble. You need to be checking in every couple of days. Everytime that oil light comes on it means low pressureand that in turn means you are damaging the bearing shells on the crank ...

Thanks Marko, they haven't done anything yet and by the sounds of it by the time I'll need to do stuff the warranty will be up.

I can't fault them. Chris is especially attentive.

That almost wills me to pay whatever it takes. However I'm not a millionaire so some thought will be given to future needs...

I'll buy my next Alfa from him.:) :) :)

How do you go about unplugging the injectors?

I unplugged in turn each of four plugs about a foot behind the oil cap on my 156.

When I unplugged the last one (on the right) the engine cut out. I dont think it was the injectors I was unplugging.

I'm fairly handy with the car but just never did anything with the injectors.

Can anyone post an image please?
