B&M and Memory Sticks

I couldn't get my 159 to recognize any USB memory sticks when I first picked it up from the dealers on Tuesday. When I took it back they told me it could only recognize up to 15 sticks, and (I bought it used) it already had 15 in it's list. They cleared the list and all works fine now. As yet I haven't found that limit in the documentation, and thought it worth mentioning in case it's not common knowledge.

Also at the dealers they showed me a (rather short) list of USB brands and sizes known to work, but it didn't include any over 1 GB.

I'd like to use bigger sticks than that, so was wondering if others have found the B&M Media Player fussy about which sticks it'll play, and do you have any recommendations for, or warnings against, particular models of USB stick, ideally in the 8 or 16GB range.

Aaagh, my old man's having the same problems, see this thread

2 things sound fishy about your situation:
1. I'm not sure how the system could remember 15 memory sticks -- just about the only thing that could be stored is the name of the stick, which is likely to be similar across different sticks, so not a bulletproof way to do things.
2. The only restriction with regards to USB and disk size would be to do with power requirement. Larger disks usually require more power, but that's not the case with memory sticks, more with larger hard drives (eg 160Gb etc). The techie bit: if the drive/stick you want to use requires <500 mA then you should be fine.

When you say they "cleared the list" it would be helpful to know exactly what they did, from the detail on the other thread it sounds like they just disconnected the battery - aka "three fingered salute"

Lots of misinformation from dealers on this who clearly don't know nuffin about B&M and ARUK the same tbh

Aah see latest post.

Make sure you've got all the filenames in Win-friendly format (did mine at 15 characters and no spaces) and you should be OK.

You could have been right about 15 memory sticks as it seems it builds a cache of the files when it's plugged in.

If you get the message "Building media player library" from the B&M lady, you're sorted.

Thanks Both
I think the sticks do have some sort of identity, as I notice that each time a PC meets one that it hasn't seen before the "Found New Hardware" flag pops up. 15 is a plausible limit as that could be 0001 to 1111 in binary. The dealer tells me they used the diagnostic kit to clear that memory out.

Good to know that 16GB works, especially the slightly convoluted SD card + card reader configuration, sounds as if it's not a fussy as the shortness of the dealer's list implied.

Top Trumps

Using a Kingston Data Traveller 64GB stick. No problem. Something like 7,000 files (my entire collection) on it at 192 kbps MP3 - only half full! All with file names exactly as WMP created them. Many longer than 15 characters and almost all with spaces.

Sure I read in manual that system only cpable of remebering one stick at a time.
