Automatic Wipers ?

My automatic wipers only work sporadically. When I first bought the car they started working automatically when it rained which surprised me but then it only worked occasionally since then. Most of the time I have to turn them on manually.

I checked the switch is set to Auto but 90% of the time I have to switch them on manually when it rains. Do other people have this issue ?

I noticed the rear wipers came on when I was reversing in the rain so guess the front ones should be the same shouldnt they ?

I have this issues on my 60plate giulietta everytime it rains they won't work unless I use the stalk once to activate after that they work fine, I'm starting to think it's designed that way for a reason, not sure of the reason though lol my sensitivity is on full and there on auto all the time, I think the only auto part is the speed they move, which does work very well to be fair.

Just in case you didn't already know this, or don't have a owner handbook, every time the ignition is turned off you need to re-enable the auto wipers, by switching from Auto to Off then back to Auto. This is a design feature, so that the wipers don't come on automatically when you turn on the car with ice on the windscreen etc

Behaves the same as in the older cars - Stilo, 156, 147, 159 etc. Do you have a handbook? I remember you were asking about the recirculation/pollution sensor before so I imagine not. The wipers need to be turned off and back to AUTO to make the "acquisition stroke". You might have achieved that by using the windscreen washer on the other 10% of occasions.

Rear wiper operates when reversing IF the front wipers are active.

Time delay between wipes - or speed of continuous wiping - varies according to droplets of water measured over a tiny area near the top of the windscreen. It's like TV ratings, where out of 100 self-volunteering participants, 8 watched a TV programme... and sadly that's extrapolated to say that 450,000 Australians watched it, so advertising costs $$$$... it's all a crock of ****.

If there is a water spot on the glass over the sensor, the water will 'pool' around it and droplets will break up, blow around, etc. making the extrapolation hopelessly inaccurate. Try polishing the glass over the sensor with a silicone-free polish. Still won't help when you brake and water runs off the roof, of course, as those rivulets miss the sensing area.

Thanks guys - that is very fiddly to do all that to make it "Automatic" Lol

I hope this cumbersome system improves on later models.

It is like talking to Siri on my phone. Unfortunately Siri is switched off. Looks like Ill be using manual wipers as well

Better still I should get Siri to operate the wipers ! :hehe::hehe:

Haha - can't see Siri operating the wipers anytime soon but theoretically possible through an OBD gateway and a special app - very specific to the body computer though, would need to be specially written for the Giulietta! :D

I recall that my Mercedes CLS automatically activated wipers without 'first-time enabling'. Turn the key on and if it was raining, the wipers would start. I seem to remember a great number of forum complaints about unwanted dry wipes, particularly after parking in dusty conditions. Mine would sometimes give a few dry wipes before giving up. Requiring a one-time manual wipe is probably a better idea overall.

My 159 seems to have a mind of it's own on the wipers. works fine on first start then either doesn't notice the rain or goes into top speed regardless of water falling on the screen drives me mad :weeping:
Tried cleaning the sensor and the screen but makes no difference.
I don't actually think there is anything wrong just poor qaulity sensor as sometimes it will work as I think it should

They've driven me mad over the years, too. Have you tried polishing the glass and applying Rain-X? New wiper blades?

Sometimes the sensor loses its bonding to the glass - I think it is usually pressed against a silicone gel to achieve minimal change in refractive index such that the sensor is focussed on the outsidesurface of the glass. Have a look for an evenly-dark surface across the sensor. If there are 'cracks' or 'bubbles', get a windscreen shop to re-bond it. I had that done once and it improved matters.

I have no problems with my Auto wipers, other than the rear one often wipes too often when it is raining.

The front and rear seem to be linked, so the more rain which goes on the front screen also means that the rear wipes more.

But the faster you go the less the rear actually needs to be wiped even though the front needs to be wiped more.

Oh and yes it only activates after you switch on/off or you do a flick wipe.

I have the sensitivity setting on mine in the middle, same with the auto lights (but I hardly use those)
