Hiya everyone, thought I would show you my project. I have just got this car, its a 1978 Alfetta GTV that has been standing for quite a few years now. Very little rust that I can see. My aim is to turn it into a Historic race car. I have raced Golf's, single seaters and karts so I'm not new to racing and my goal has always been to build a historic race car.
I'm going to first strip the interior and get a roll cage and exhaust done (TNT to do both) and then start the engine, brake and suspension mods....
I'll be needing lots of advice and encouragement!

Welcome man!! Good luck with the build! Where are you based?

Trackman used to race an Alfetta GT, so knows these cars well! The trans-axle is a great platform for racing, and I'm also busy with an Alfetta 159i Sedan which I'm transforming into a track/race toy!

Your car looks neat! Looking forward to seeing your build!

Any questions you may have, Trackman is sure to be able to answer!

Do you want to enter it in Trofeo or Historics? Because the specs for Historics dictate that you are not allowed to change that much, having to stick to original parts mostly... which is costly! Trofeo is open, but a handicap series, so you can be fast, but come last!

Trackman's dad is racing in Trofeo this weekend at Zwartkops, so you are welcome to come say hi and have a chat - we will be there crewing for him!

I want to race it in the Historics Pre '77 class, the regs aren't too strict but they don't allow me to put coil overs in but brakes are free and so is a lot of engine mods. I would like to keep the car quite standard but I will be looking to change the brakes to a GTV6 setup or something else that won't cost the earth.
What car does Trackman's dad drive? I am definately coming to do some investigations!

Nice - but like I said, Historics series does get expensive quite easily - but it would be nice to see a GTV in the mix there!

We'll be there with the 'White Beast' as we've named the little 82/3 Giulietta  It's a full racecar that still runs the Alfa 2.0 DOHC 8V motor with fuel injection and custom ITBs. It's making around 94kw on the wheels at Braam's dyno at Zwartkops (and it's a stingy dyno) - so it's been worked some. Running a close-ratio gearbox, big 4-Pot AP Caliper brakes up front, coil-overs all round, and the body's been cut away for weight - it only weighs 720kg! It has run 1:14s around Zwartkops this year

Trackman also has a Giulietta which we took round the track on the Alfa Trackday this past weekend. Motor is a standard 1.8 DOCH 8V motor, with fuel injection and ITBs. Car is properly setup with full-race suspension, dual GTV6 calipers on each front wheel, full rollcage and race dash etc. It handles brilliantly, but lacks the power to do it justice... a proper 2.0l motor is already on the cards after this weekend ;)

You'll enjoy seeing these cars... they really are brilliant! Should serve as good motivation for you to do your GTV!

Here is a video of Trackman's dad's car in a race with a Shelby Cobra around Z earlier this year during a Trofeo race - YouTube - Alfa Romeo Giulietta 2.0 VS AC Cobra 427 on Zwartkops

Roger, I am in Midrand as well....... Where did you get the car ?
I saw a glimpse of one on the corner of New Road and Old Pretoria, in a parking lot ..... I was tempted to go see, as it has been there for a while , covered in dust.....

Eric...a mate of mine who races with me bought it a few years ago to turn it into a historic racer but never got round to working on it..so I've taken it off his hands. He has also had a look at that Alfa in Midrand, apparently it belongs to a BMW mechanic but it's totally stuffed....I'm going to try and have a look this afternoon, maybe I can salvage some things for my car.

alfaquad...that car looks awesome, love the way it kills the Cobra in the corners! I'll come round on Saturday and say hi...

Howzit Roger

Are you having the car resprayed ie, you gonna strip it down to bare metal? I have some valuable info for you if you gonna go that far..

the best things with these cars is to make it as light as possible, It will save you seconds on the track is every way thinkable, I just dont know what your regs are for Pre '77..

Really do come chat to us on Saturday, things are normally hectic and busy, but dont hesitate to say "hi, Im Roger I want assistance"

I hope you enjoy your project..

Hi Trackman...yes, I want to strip the car down and respray in and out..have even thought of changing the colour but everyone says I must keep it red. I think there are too many red Alfa's but anyway....
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
I will see you on Saturday.....

Look at the rules for Historics regarding wheel sizes. This will dictate how big the brakes can be, and thus, what options you have! There are many options. The dual-GTV6 calipers on Trackman's car work brilliantly - we even did an emergency brake test on the backstraight after a whole session of hotlaps on Z. Powerbrake disc and pad combos work very well, and Clive would be able to tell you exactly what combo will work for the intended use. They also last VERY long!

Also, suspension wise, get some GTV6 torsion bars as a minimum... it will considerably stiffen up the suspension compared to the straws of the normal 2.0. When you see us at Z on Saturday, you can have a nice long chat with Trackman to find out what works and what doesn't. His and his dad's cars don't run anti-roll bars for instance. Something strange, but it works.

Hi Roger
Agree with Alfaquad. The GTV6 torsion bars (23.4mm) is the minimum you can do, but they are not really stiff enough for really serious track work, but they are cheap. At least they are a LOT stiffer than the original 18 mm bars that your car came out with, if memory my serves me well. You can get some nice 33mm ones if your budget allows. See Performatek - Online Catalog.
If your car is lightened a lot, you might even get away with only single GTV6 Brembo calipers. There are a couple of these cars that initially used this setup when they started with trofeo and these worked okay until they started making serious power.

Thanks for the advice, I will do some checking to see what I can do. In the meantime I have stripped most of the interior, now I have to get rid of the horrible black stuff...I've got a heat gun and a paint scraper, hopefully it isn't too much of a mission. My concern is that the car has a sunroof so it has a "false" roof compartment. Should I get an angle grinder and cut it off? I'm worried the guys at TNT wont be able to put a cage in with the sunroof compartment still in.

I may have a set of GTV6 torsions for u if u going that route, Im getting 30mm performatek ones (already shipped just waiting for arival) the gtv6 ones are fine as a start and they are cheap.
Im still running GTV6 brembos and they work fine, secret is the right disk and pad combo to get them to stop.PS my car weighs 960kilos, dont really know if that counts as light?
U dont get power brake disks for the 4 hole hubs so bear in mind if u go with brembos u may also need 5 hole hubs, I have a spare complete set of 5 hole front hubs with brembo calipers and a rear 5 hole dedion if u interested, talk to me

Not much to report except that the dash is out and most of the bituman cladding. I've also taken the carbs, radiator and front grill out. Does anyone know where I can get ram tubes and spares for the Dellorto carb's from?
I'm also getting some GTV6 suspension and brake stuff from Frost!

Don't know about locally but I got some ram tubes from Alfaholics a while back: Pipercross Constant Radius Ram Pipes | Classic Alfa Romeo spare parts and accessories

and the filter: Pipercross Single Filter | Classic Alfa Romeo spare parts and accessories

They also have carb spares: Carburettor rebuild kits | Classic Alfa Romeo spare parts and accessories

And the rand is pretty good against the pound at the mo

Hey guys, time for an update. I finally got the car back from TNT today, rollcage and exhaust is done. They did a great job and the car is incredibly rigid. I'm busy taking the engine out to have it checked out and tweaked a bit ;) and it will be off to the painters next week.
