This may or may not happen in your car..

But i never put the controls on auto, normally (weather of late) i have it on Lo, mono, set 2-3 and feet n face.

But ive noticed everytime i get in car and drive for a few minutes, that the AIRCON suddenly just turns on. I notice the sudden chill then turn it off. Now i wouldnt mind if it was set to auto, but it isnt.

Why? Im thinking it may be because the lo setting, as when u turn it down to that setting the AC does kick in.

NOt a biggie, and im not going to book it in..... but anyone new to the G may think its odd.

Why not leave it in auto? I've done that in my last gtv, the brera and now the G - keeps a good environment in the cabin all year round and less fiddling too :D

Ok, so I like a nice dry atmosphere in the car (being a sweaty so and so when the temp nudges early spring levels! ) and I'm a believer that car a/c is up there with the invention of the wheel!

Fully agree - that's what it's for. Mine is set at 22C all year-round, so no need to touch it :).

My Spider (916) and GTV both did this. I would start the car and the aircon would automatically come on even if the blower wasn't on. I don't know if it's the same for your cars but in the owners manual I have there is a sequence you can do with the ignition key to turn the aircon off so it doesn't turn on as soon as you start the car.

Always have kept mine on in every car, but Alfas do tend to keep the fan on high in auto mode for some reason. I generally keep it to around 22°C, and with the hot weather that we have been having here lately (only 23°C today though) the fan does seem to go a bit mental, although my 156 also did exactly the same.

Since the interior sensor was replaced in mine the fan has been quite "normal". It might blow a bit to get to temperature, but then settles to 2 bars speed. This is in auto, 21C on passenger and 18C on drivers, and during the hottish weather at the end of May.

I am one happy bunny! :cheese:

They do say that you should activate your air con at least once a month, but to say you "must" have it on all the time, is a bit OTT lol

Ive had numerous new cars with AC, and hardly use it, unless really needed - as steve says - ive never had a problem. But then i never keep my cars for over 2-3 years..

Do you have the automatic windscreen de-mister? This uses the AC, and is independent of the setting.

If you really are going to turn the system off, turn the thermostat to 19 degrees or something more reasonable, so that when the AC comes on to clear your windscreen, you don't get an arctic blast.

(Even with AC off, the climate system aims to reach a set temperature)

Just revisiting this as i have a new G Launch Edition and am experiencing this problem. I leave home, a/c is off, outside temp could be anything, internal temp set anywhere between 16.5 and 23, system clears morning screen mist (with a/c still off) very quickly, within a few miles a/c switches on automatically, screen then mists up with the wet/damp thing that happens for 15 odd mins after a/c is turned off by me, therefore cocking up clean and dry windows that never needed the a/c's help.

Since this old thread faded out has anyone had any experience with resolving this and fixing this a/c trait so it ONLY comes on manually when auto feature is not being used, as its a total pain as i dont require the a/c on unless needed for various reasons.

Thanks.

Leave on auto all the time.

I hate to disappoint you, BUT! as dgmayhead said, leave the system on auto and quit playing around changing temps between 16.5 (?!?!?!) and 23 degrees.
You are the cause for the misting issues. By not using the a/c the humidity level will remain high.

Leave it on auto at a narrow range (mine 19.5 to 21.5) for a month. If your windows still mist up when the a/c kicks in later, take the car in to have it checked.

Thanks for your advice. I was pointing out that this happens throughout the temperature range I noted, clearly it's going to be set at the higher value on a cold morning and a lower value later in the day. I don't sit there turning the temp gauge backwards and forwards between low and high throughout the journey! I've never had to leave any other car in auto all the time and other cars windows I own don't mist up the second you turn the a/c off so something needs looking at I presume. It's a 2014 with 16k miles (have only had 2 weeks) on it so so maybe just needs a system clean after little use over 5 years.

i hate to say this; but it sounds like an A/C ECU fault.

like it's just gone-crackers.

I have something very similar in 'another' Italian car, albeit from some time ago.

I'll be driving along; and the fan speed will just jump-up by itself, and have to be manually turned down. It doesn't happen a lot; but the system definitely has a mind of its own, when it's in ECON mode rather than AUTO.

Sounds fairly normal to me with a car that has climate control, there are sensors in the system that measure window misting. My 159 had it and if misting was sensed on windscreen it would bring fan speed up and switch air con on if it was off.

I find leaving A/C on all the time helps with misting up as it removes moisture. A car will most up when switching air con off due to change in humidity. I really don’t think you have a fault just the system doing what it is designed to do.
