Bit of advice required here Gents (or Ladies!)
Here's the scenario : A friend of a friend! has a 51 plate 2.0 T/S which has suffered timing belt failure, resulting in broken valves & holed piston crown in No1 cyl, basically the engine is beyond economic repair. I am in possession of a 99 (T reg) 146 1.8T/S that I am breaking up and have been asked can the 1.8 engine in it be used to replace the broken 2.0 in the 156? (He's not to bothered about a small loss of performance)
I know this conversion is a little out of the ordinary but what are your thoughts guys?
Is it just a case of fitting all the ancillaries from the 2.0 engine on the 1.8 engine or is it more involved than that? What problems could you foresee? Do any AO members have any experience of doing this?
Thanks in advance

Shouldn't be any major problems....I'd have thought your 146 would probably be plastic top so an easy swap. If its an alloy top, a bit more to it, but essentially swap all manifolds, the exhaust cam pulley and cam sensor and a few other sensors, and it should be fairly straightforward. You'll need to use the 156 clutch assembly, and if your 146 doesn't have aircon you might have a bit of a faff with bracketry off the 2.0, but I don't think it should be insurmountable. I think the 2.0 ECU will run the 1.8 without any real issues.

Thanks rgwm for the the reply. The 146 is plastic top type and does have air-con so as you say hopefully a fairly easy swap, do you think the 156 flywheel is the way to go or can the 146 flywheel accept the 156 clutch?
What is the difference between the 1.8 & 2.0 exhaust cam pulley / cam sensor?
What do you think about the MAF (use the 156 or the 146 one)?
Lots of questions I know but thanks in advance

Your cam sensor is the same on both engines as they are both plastic top. The early ally top engines have a different cam sensor. Use the 156's original MAF, the 156's original ECU, infact use as many of the 156's original sensors as possible and you'll be fine :)

Yeah, what he said.....

To be honest, I'm not sure about the flywheel.....I'd be inclined to use the 156 flywheel and (preferably new) clutch, just to be sure, but the actual flywheels may be interchageable.....
