I was just wondering whether anyone has any experience with the motor? On paper, it sounds good - a near perfect blend of economy and power, but I've only really been able to find one review (thanks to "Farmer G" for that).

Any thoughts? Also, any idea how it compares to the 1.4 16v?

Thanks!!

i drove a fiat grande punto a few months back, with what i believe is the same engine, and i was VERY VERY impressed, i had it for 2 days and done 300km in that time, it was smooth, and averaged 4litres/100km !!!!!!! thats very good...

i think they are great engines, i believe (might be wrong) that its the same engine as in the new diesel Vauxhall corsa too!!!!

The Multijet 75 PS version was chosen in 2005 as the International Engine of the Year in the 1-litre to 1.4-litre category.
So the 90PS version should be only better than that :)
My friend has this engine in his Fiat Punto and he is very pleased with it. Consumption is around 4l/100km (~70mpg) in a Punto (old one, not Grande Punto) and it goes reasonably well for this size of car...

I've got a 1.3jtdm and had it for a week. So far I've been really impressed. Took it to Devon this weekend and was really impressed with its overtaking power etc. I'm a girl so not sure of all the technical terms. But I used to have a 1.7 diesel Merc so wasn't expecting much from a 1.3 but what a surprise. Feels no different.
On the fuel economy side, it takes about ÂŁ38 to fill it up from when the fuel indicator comes on. We drove to North Devon from South Wales and drove about 20 miles each day (sorry don't have exact mileage) and I still have quarter of a tank. I didn't hold back that much either and a lot of it was driving through country lanes, so pretty impressive I think.
I'm very happy with my 1.3 Mickey the Mito. (kids thinks he looks like mickey mouse as he's alfa red)!

A few years ago I bought a brand new 1.3 16V Multijet Grande Punto with 6-speed gearbox(which was soon discontinued by Fiat for reasons that were not clear at the time). I did 20,000 miles in that car which was a joy to drive. The engine never missed a beat and it did seem to get more economical as the miles clocked up. From memory, I think the average fuel economy hovered around 46 mpg.

My only slight reservation concerned the matching of gearbox to engine: too often I would get caught in the wrong gear due to a lack of torque at 20 - 40 mph in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears. I'm sure Alfa have sorted that out in the Mito......

No actually it's because petrol engines use a proportion of the power they produce pumping air through the throttle. Diesel engines have no throttle so this pumping loss is eliminated.
A petrol engine actually runs more economically with your foot down (within reason), from a purely thermodynamic point of view.
Also a petrol engine must always burn a roughly stoichiometric mixture of fuel and oxygen (14:1), whereas a diesel engine can go as low as 40:1 at idle. This is why diesel engines are more efficient than petrol, and always will be.

All engines are inefficient at the edges of their performance envelope.

As for payback for diesel, it really depends on how many miles you do.

Don't forget you're also in a cheaper tax bracket too than the 1.4 16v, so you'll save a few quid there too (currently ÂŁ35 vs ÂŁ120) so you'll save a bit of brass there alone.

Performance-wise there's really not a lot in it, especially when you'll most likely get an extra 20mpg out of the little diesel in real world driving, I've driven the 1.3 and it's rev happy, surprisingly nippy and pulls in easily over 60mpg so I doubt you'd be disappointed if you get one.
