It's been getting on for 6 months since i traded my 166 v6 Lusso for a 745i se... so far believe it or not the BMW has prooved thay are not necessarily the 'ultimate driving machine', Having said that it is a glorious piece of engineering and imho a nice beasty from some angles :) .

So far however it has spend 1 of 6 of the months at the local BMW dealership, blocked drain which resulted in flooding (several inches) in the cabin, fuel sender unit (needed replaced), ecu ( one of the many failed resulting in 'drive cautiously' warning lights, not what you need when doing ummm a little above the national limit.

I can place my hand firmly on heart and state that in all the years i had the 166 (just over 3 years), it never spent more than 2 days off road for any reason, now having spent acouple of hours catching up on reading these forums it makes me more determined than ever to right my wrongs.... not sure when BUT at some point this year i intend coming back into the fold so to speak.

It's so much more fun owning an Alfa Romeo

The reality of the real world bites
unlike the marketing bull**** of salesmen
and uninformed opinion of the masses.

;)

Hope you get your Beemer back soon though.
It is a pain in the arse not to have your car.

I'll be collecting the e65 later this afternoon....

The dealer called  they were waiting a new fuel sender unit... parts delivered a pump instead... 'So Sir we put all back together and ran diagnostics, all seems well with your car, you can collect it later today'..... Ummm ok but what of the other faults ... 'well Sir i dont have the job sheet but Brian ( whoever he is :wow: ) assures me that all is well.... yes ummm ok i'll be there to collect around 5pm.

I swear right here and now if i get a repeat of any of these warning lights in the coming week i'll be front page news in the Sun having managed to ram a whole 7 series bimmer into the dark rear cavity of one Managing Director at my local BMW Dealership.

Why oh why do i get the feeling i'm going to be takin the :tut: stance in the days to come.

Don't stress to much mate, your not the only one! my mates M3 has been back to the dealers 8 times in 9 months, for a total of 37 days!

Problems from SMG gear box, interior noises, brakes and electrical faults.
He's not the only one though, my other mates 320i has been on holiday at his dealership 4 times last year for completely different faults.

To think they laughed at me for getting my 156,, seriously though, it just comes down to modern motors, no one is safe and it doesn't really matter what you get, the more mass produced something is, the more likely things might go wrong.

This is what BMW allwais claimed to have: a level quality and a record of reliability which Alfa doesn't have!
The only good thing you'll get out of the Beemer is that probably it didn't depreciate that much,so you'll have lots of dough to spend on your next 166 MK2.:)

Have yourself a wee run upto perth this afternoon and see if they can source you a 166 3.2 facelift or can you manage with a Brera? It is a nice day for a run here anyway.

I always liked the 7 series (along with Audi A8) - I love big motors and feel a bit let down that Alfa does not build something in that size. BUT it has to be Italian for me, A Maserati Quattroporte is the answer I suppose - That is what you should trade the beemer for :)

Accountant has a E65, and always wondered what is the better car, to me id choose the 166 all the time! E65 is one monster of a car, but still doesnt have the looks and the sexy'ness of the 166!

You have both, so what did you prefer, not including all the faults!

e65 vs 166 hmmm there's no real comparison, the panzer is huge in comparison and even with the problems i've had it truly is a sublime car, there can't be that many on the road in Scotland as i seem to get that OMG look where ever i go... having said that the 166 when all polished up used to get the same admiring glances.

I really hope AR make a decent job when styling the 169, all pictures so far have not really done 'it' for me, i too hope they make it a rear driver which by all accounts looks to be the case if rumour of the quatroporte platform being the basis for the 169.

When all is said and done i'll be back driving an Alfa before to long and i must admit it's something i'm looking forward to, if however you have the opportunity to drive an e65 (7 series) at some point, make sure you do so as it really is a wonderful car ( when fully functional)

Ummm that probably makes no sense maybe

My dad went in one and he said it was one damm good car! It makes the S-class look cheap and nasty! The E65 some say it looks ugly, but i think it looks mean! And the inside, sat in the rear does seem lush!

Update to my previos posts...

Without putting to fine a point on it... I told my local BMW dealership to take the e65/7 series and place it where the sun does not shine... if i'm honest there was little resistance to this suggestion BUT i found myself in a 'situation', yes they would clear the finance on the car and take it back into stock... this would be based on either a 7 to replace or me buying another car.

The sales manager was kind enough to lend me a 535 d m sport for a week... holy mother of the lord... diesil technology has moved along, i spent an age staring at the e60/5 series sat my drive (you know by now where this is leading), I need a car of this size, for me the options are few and sadly AR currently don't produce a 5 series sized vehicle.

Having go over the looks of the car and the fact that I could make it a little more exclusive with my choices, I headed along to my local AR dealership, now to be fair it was a big ask... I basically stated if there was a deal to be done I was interested, i would have taken a serious view on a q4 or q4 sw or a fully loaded 2.4d, i would have even suffered a loss on the 7 had there been any sort of deal avaliable, sadly as i shook hands with the sales specialist and he said i'll be in touch, I knew deep down i'd never get that call.... still waiting on any sort of contact.

Interestingly as i was there he did make comment on his recent trip to milan and the disguised 149's they spotted on the test track, he seems to think AR are on to something good, he also told me of his joy in seeing the 8c spider and listening in envy as it was fired up right in front of them ( wish it had been me ). He also made comment on the fact that the whole trip had centered around a new drive towards customer satisfaction, this would involve the closure of dealerships but in the hope that those which remained grew in size and had the sole focus on AR as a re emerging brand.

I've ordered a new car, yes it's a 5 series BMW, I also start a new job next week, Project Managing for a company in the NW of England, I'll be doing probably 500 mls a week so the diesil power and economy will be handy, I really hope the 169 materialises in a few years as i'll be looking to change in 3 yrs or there abouts, for now i'm dreaming of maybe buying an older AR when we move home to hopefully somewhere in the country with outbuildings that i can go play at being a restoration type on weekends.

Not that many will be interested here, the spec on my daily driver to be is below....

E60 525d M Sport (3.0d)
Carbon Black
M Rear Spoiler
Natural Brown Dakota
Dark Poplar High Gloss
M Double Spoke 172 19's
6sp Auto

Auto Dim Int + Folding Ext Mirrors
Extended Interior Light Pack
USB/Audio Interface
Visability Pack
Media Pack

Plus all the standard toys
