Well if you like 16 go for them Since it will not be an everyday car just for weekends i dont you will mind the hash driving... On the contrary , it will be a change ....
Hi Greek

The harsh ride doesn't really bother me. My main concern is if I fit 16's and lower the car by 30mm, will the tyres rub on the wheelarches ?

I was thinking of 194 45 x 16's. Do you know of anyone who has fitted 16's to a lowered Sprint ?

Wheels and tyres arrived today :D

Eventually decided to go for the 16's with 195 x 45 tyres so hopefully that'll allow me to fit the 305mm discs and Brembo calipers to the front......and lower the car 30mm ?

Stripped the engine down the other night to find that the big end bearing on number 4 cylinder was non existent, I mean completely gone with the crank running directly on the conrod. Crank and rod are both scrap. Just as well I have spares :)

Engine block's going into the machine shop for a rebore today to match the new 87.4mm pistons.

When I bought this car I was hoping to have it finished and on the road for around ÂŁ3k (including the purchase price). Realistically it gonna be somewhere between ÂŁ5.5K and ÂŁ6K as my spend so far has been over ÂŁ4.5K. :( My budgeting skills tend to go out the window when it comes to restoring cars

Yeap, thats the problem with restoring car..... After some point you want everything to be perfect and thats when the cost goes high... Good choice for wheel size, any pics to see what kind?

Since I won't be selling this car in the future I don't mind spending whatever it takes to get it like we want it.

Here's the wheel that I bought:

Got the engine block back from the machine shop having had it rebored to take the 87.4mm pistons :) :)

Replacement crank's been machined too with new big end and main bearings. The machining bloke has done a great job because I always check this stuff with a micrometer myself after machining and he's got all the sizes on this engine spot on

Onwards and upwards !

there is something about seeing engines in this state, that makes me want to start putting it together !!!

Good job buddy ! Will you paint the block ?
Thanks.....started rebuilding it already.

I like to take my time rebuilding engines and making sure that everything's perfect. After taking the pics I fitted the main bearings, thrust washers and the crankshaft. Tonight I'll fit the engine backplate and then bolt the whole thing onto an engine stand. I'm a bit concerned about the aluminium backplate being able to take the weight of the engine while bolted to the stand. Has anyone had any problems with it before ?

I'm planning to paint the block before I refit the cylinder heads ....... red or blue, not sure yet.

Nice Job with the wheels and engine Coop - but how did you get it into the house? or is that a very posh floor in the garage??
Good question ! My wife's away to Tenerife for the weekend so I took advantage of the situation and decided to start the engine rebuild in our conservatory.

She's back this afternoon so no doubt I'll get a phone call to give me an ear bashing. I'll tell her that engine building is a serious business and needs to be done in the cleanest possible environment ........ I'm sure she'll understand :D :D

The last time this happened I had the front clamshell of my Lotus Elise in there and when she came home she went nuts ...... I really don't understand why women get so emotional

If his wife is anything like mine I would put money on it that one of those nice shiny pistons has be inserted into the wrong bore:cheese:
That was always a possibility but I took the risk anyway   It's now back out in the garage so as not to push my luck too far !

I'm off to the Technoclassica show in Essen this weekend with my boy and we've promised to bring her back a nice present as a trade off (bribery works every time !)....... I wonder if she'll appreciate a nice set of red Brembo calipers ? Well what else do you buy the woman who's got everything :D :D

Got the engine on the stand now and fitted the pistons. It's coming together nicely and at this rate it should be finished by the end of this week ;) (the engine that is)
