Hi everyone,

My unknown oil leak today turned out to be the gearbox. I took the car down to my local Alfa specialist and they confirmed that the gearbox was leaking oil. I picked up the car and took it to a gearbox specialist and it seemed to be getting worse and worse until it was scraping and screeching in all gears.

I've now just commited to put in a new gearbox which should be ready by friday. Lets hope this cures it!!!

Can't wait for the credit card statement Ha ha...

On the upside took the car out for a long spin last night and loved every second of it. That's why I bought an alfa!!

Sorry to hear about your car troubles, let's hope it's sorted soon.

It'll all be worth it when the summer comes and the hood is down!

Good Luck. :)

I don't suppose curing the leak and refilling with oil would help? After all you said that it got worse the more oil dropped out rather than an existing gearbox problem, assuming the change was sweet enough the previous night.

Or did the 'specialist' jump on the bandwagon and find faults other than the leak?

Either way, best of luck.

the gears started crunching, he said it was the differential and that it needed a new box. I don't know anything about that sort of thing so I told him to get on with it.

don't suppose you considered dropping in a box from a 1.6. it makes loads of difference to the pick up and accelaration assuming its a 2.0litre unit. just an idea.

a new/refurb box from alfa is about £850. you'll then have fitting and VAT i'm afraid. pressumably you may well have to get the clutch replaced [advisable while the box is out anyway]

I hate to think what it's GT potential on the motorway would be though

i've driven a 2.0 156 with the aforementioned 1.6 gear box and it was great.

probably one of the cheaper in real terms performance up grades that can be carried out.

drove a 80 mile round trip on a variety of roads and no issues. apart from driving even more enthusiastically than usual.:D

Yeas.... stick a new clutch in too. That'll sort it for the next 50,000 miles.. Otherwise you may be dismantling it again soon.

You're remarkably cheerful for someone who's about to be touched for a Gorilla...

Good luck, anyways..at least it will be splendid again soon.

Just got the car back cost me £640 for new gearbox drives like a dream though. Now I'm going to have to sell it to pay of the credit card bills.

Great

That was cheap.

Is that a "new" secondhand gearbox, a new re-con (exchange?) gearbox or a brand new gearbox? Fitted or not?

The price is for a reconditioned gearbox (Exchange) including clutch and fitting and testing. Did it in two days but my hand brake doesn't work properly now.

Any way who cares it was cheap!!

That is very cheap IMHO, considering clutch aswell.

Sorry to hear about it though and that you may have to part company due to the bill.
It's times like this that you wish you could dig into the "passionate alfa owners benevolent (spelt wrong) fund"
