How often does it freeze?

e.g. Always when it starts, after a certain amount of time or randomly? What happens when you restart?
First time was on Saturday - it hung in the middle of a game. I switched off because the missus was chasing me. I forgot about it.

Sunday I switched on and thought I heard a slightly unusual whirr sound. Xbox booted but no response at the 'desktop' menu screen. Removed FIFA disk and rebooted. This time it seemed to respond ok, so loaded disk....got so far then it hung. Removed disk, booted. This time it hung at the xbox desktop, no response to input from the controller. I tried another game and actually got through to playing before it hung again.

Looked at the xbox website, they do seem hung up on the RROD issues (my xbox isn't used to marathon sessions, is well ventilated etc.). Anyway, I followed some instructions and emptied the cache (during one of the episodes where the thing was responding to the controller), and removed and replaced the HDD on the side of the unit. No dice.

It does seem to be making a low whirring/clunk sound - the missus thought it my mobile on vibrate mode at first. That seems to happen on start-up and when it does that seems to be when it hangs most consistently.

The power brick has an orange light on it.?????? edit = normal cos it goes green when the xbox is switched on  d'oh!

Latest attempt this morning - makes funny noise, get desktop up, can control where I'm going for a second or two and then it hangs, no funny lights etc.

I can't help with your problem Steve....but it seems XBOX's are well known for issues regarding loading up. My 'original' XBOX used to start to load a disk, then it would make an odd noise...then the disk tray would shoot open with the disk spinning wildly as if it was still in the machine. On occasion the jolt made as the tray fired open was enough to launch the spinning disk into the air:eek:..........dangerous things, games consoles:lol:

opened it up as wlel past it's sell by date

there was some fluff - not as much as I expected - it's ***** and span now. Same problem happening though. I have unplugged it, will leave it like that for an hour or two.......

I boots up but hangs at different points

I whacked on a dvd, went through several scenes no problem - my xbox games all hang though and sometimes it doesn't get past the dashboard...

strange

You were signing in and out all over the place every time I've seen you online this weekend Steve. I thought it was your internet connection dropping out. Don't know if that was a result of you trying to fix it or was to do with the fault.

The console freezing is the problem just before RROD. :( Can be fixed mind for nowt or a few pennys if you're feeling flush. Fixed mine and its been fine for 2 years now. Before that it did RROD 4 times in two weeks :(

Give us a shout and I'll walk you through the repair.

The xbox only hangs when asked to perform a task that demands a lot of computing power by the looks of things mate. DVD's are minor. Fifa possiblly. Something like forza will defo make it hang. Keep an eye on it mate but RROD is only round the corner me thinks from my experience :(
