I have a 1999 phase 2 2.0 spider and my rev counter works, trip metre etc but my speedo won't read over 20 mph.. I have read that a phase 2 should have silver dials but mine has black dials as a phase 1 does? Is this because I has a red dash they kept the black dials? Is there a wire or sensor I could clean etc? If so where is it? or is it a fault with the dials...??

Any helps great as I'm now following other cars through speedcameras and today when the police where behind me I have no idea if I'm speeding or doing 20 in a 40 haha...

I wouldn't worry about it, my speedo doesn't work from about 90+ it drops to zero

The speedo gets its signals from the ABS unit. Is that working?
try the connections on top of the ABS ECU and the connections at the back of the Binnacle.

On the speedo unit there should be a paper label.

On the label is some info like manufacture date.

If the label still exists, does the date tie in with the car's manufacture date?

Also on the label is the part number. You can look your car up on ePer ( eper.fiatforum.com ) and see if the part number matches your car.

Thirdly, the other numbers refer to the number of pulses the speedo is expecting for a distance travelled. If you can persuade someone else to remove their speedo unit, you should be able to compare data.

for example, my speedo from a 97 TS reads :
60.2576.990.9

12V V.B.
(Date of Manufacture)

On my ph1 2.0 GTV i had a brief problem with the speedometer, i had a bouncing needle, it would go up to 60 for a while then no more than 35 stopped altogether after a few weeks, i replaced the drive that comes out of the back of the engine, worked perfectly after that, bought it from ebay for a tenner........

If you fit a phase one speedo in a phase 2 the mileage wont go up properly.I know cos i tried it to determine if my rev counter was knackered.After i fitted the earlier cluster into my phase 2 the rev counter worked but the speedo would do no more than 20-30 mph untill i changed them back.Nor can you mix and match the clusters the electrics vary.

Thank you Seymour... You have just answered my question... I have the same symptoms you have just described so I need a phase 2 speedo with the silver surround not the black..
