I'm trying to sort these out now rather than during the panic that's sure to ensue when the first snow is forecast but I'm having trouble finding any to fit my MiTo's 17" wheels. From trying various sites' tyre searches there doesn't seem to be much in 215/45/17 and none at all with a W or higher speed rating.

Does anyone know of anywhere stocking them or am I going to struggle to get winter tyres without buying smaller wheels too?

You won't find a "W" speed rating on winter tyres.
It is perfectly legal to run lower speed index with winter tyres.

If you open your owner's manual it lists 215/45R17 87H for winter tyres.

I did see that but last year people were saying that you needed the same rating as the normal tyres. In that case I did see somewhere with V rated tyres but the size still seems rare.

They were wrong.
You do not need the same speed rating with winter tyres.

I bought 16 inch steel wheels and the higher profile tyre compensates the rolling radius of the 17 inch wheel. I would give reifen.de a whirl will be cheaper than UK for sure
