Why oh why would alfa get rid of one of the most beautiful cars ever made? The GT?

Just amazes me that they wouldnt want to carry on selling the GT? Was it a flop? is it that they will be producing new common chassis soon? Is 6 years along time for a model? suppose so.
Will Gt/147 parts still be available in years to come?

Oh well just means our cars will be definite classics! And surely its the v6 which will be the future favourite collectors item?

No Alfa's are ever around for long now .. they have to keep bringing out new models to attract attention from buyers and compete with the other brands.

Plus new technology and demands for "greener" motoring means smaller and smaller engines ...

You'll get over it. Car manufacturers develop new and improved vehicles all the time. Just cause you may not see it that way doesn't mean it's not progress. It's part of life.

God forgive me...but i could never warm to it.....and forgive me again....the Guilietta doesn't excite me either !!
I agree WTFH, progress is a part of life. However, for me, the 'progress' Alfa is making is perhaps not as I would have it. I'm not that excited by the Guilietta or the Mito. Somehow it feels more like a mainstream car than Alfa are known for making. Alfas are meant to be special and, though I have no proof but the emotions in my heart, I feel Alfa are losing that special something.

The GT/147/159/Brera generation of cars was a very exciting one indeed. Somehow though the new 8C/4C/Guiletta generation seems to have become...'commercialised'.

Again, it's a personal feeling I have and not one backed by anything concrete.

Hmm I'll put a wager on this Fraser

Dynamics- cars get worse the newer they are. They are full of electronic aids and functions to save the car now. Older cars relied on good quality chassis set up.

Build quality- Another total tosh point. Once again car are so full of electrics that they almost always go wrong. Cars from 20 years ago are still around because of basic simplicity. New stuff won't be beacuse either the driver will have crashed it or the ECU will have "crashed"

Servicing- Yep I'll give you half on that one although now they are so technical that you haven't a hope in hell of doing it yourself.

EU-regs- DTRL...Need I say any more :p

Crash safety- Ok the cars are safer but all it breeds is lazy bad drivers

And lets say for the sake of any other department (style). Can you honestly say a 159 is more pretty than an original spider ir any other classic alfa.

Oh and one more. Teh green department- Yes the cars are much more kind to the environment but the very fact that an old car is replaced is the precise definition of not green don't you think. Last time I checked being green ment trying to make do with what you have.

Food for though there :thumbs::lol:

Fair enough, your all right!! the 147 was long in the tooth and the Gt was based round that and the 156!! Be nice of alfa to make a new coupe!! with great chassis/ suspension and modern underpinnings!!

Suppose every pretty alfa has its day! everyone is a classic!

WTFH your giullietta looks really nice!!
Damien.

What Alfa need is a new small coupe.

The Brera is a too big, especially as it doesn't have very big rear seats.

Something a bit smaller than a GTV would be nice, and weighing under 1200Kg

And despite it's beauty, it really is starting to look a bit dated compared to current generation cars. Alfa were right to discontinue it.

I don't believe it will be a future classic to be fair.

Shame there was no follow up. The Brera is a different beast.

OOOOOhhhh not a future classic!! i pooh pooh that remark sir!!

LoL.

Hmm Brera "cough cough" the italian open top sierra!!

Just get my coat............................................................

very true.:)

I always prefered the look of the GT to the Brera.

And it has a better V6.

It was getting a bit old though, the development of the floorpan can be traced back to the mid 1980's.

It was undoubtedly time for it to be withdrawn - compared to the 2 new big sellers it's long in the tooth. Still, who cares - it's one of the best looking cars on the road in any price bracket, and in my opinion a much better looking car than the Brera (apart from at the front) that still turns head today. And I can't see the design looking out of date in the foreseeable future.

To me it's all two fold. The GT i believe is a prettier car then the Brera, in the sense that it has a conservative front. Whereas the Brera is more agressive and sexier somewhat. In regards to Alfa's new line up from 159/GT/Brera/Spider/147 to Mito/G the commercialisation that was mentioned earlier is true, however in this day and age for Alfa's survival maybe it is nessasary for now.

Salute, Giordano.

at 26 buddy I just have an appreciation for the older stuff. New stuff just doesn't do it for me. Even the GT is a bit modern! Although I like my facelift 156. I think I like the no thrill saftey I'm going to kill you when we go round this next bend feeling

I know the feeling. When I had the Renault I was hooning round a bend only to find an old Volvo 340 heading towards me on my side of the road. I stood on the brakes and all the luggage in the back slammed into the back of the front seats (obviously the rear seats were down). Having hauled the car to a stop the volvo gaily finished its (very slow) overtaking manouver and as it went past me the old man (in a flat cap, needless to say), glared and shook his head at me. My wife had to almost physically stop me from turning the car round and going after him. In that case the renault did its duty - it WAS good to drive, if you didn't mind the teeth rattling ride.

Just the natural order of things really; the GT simply came to the end of its life. Chassis getting on, and unique after end of 147 production, engines obsolete, etc.

Not an entirely unsuccessful car for Alfa though; I think they sold around 80,000 total. How many Breras did they sell?

Personally I think the GT was the best car Alfa have produced for a while, certainly since the original 156, and has not been bettered yet. The real shame of course though, is the fact that it was not replaced.

As I've said before & not meant in a boasting fashion, we're fortunate to own the V6 versions of both the GT & Brera. Both a great but the fact is that 90% of the time, the more modern car trounces the older car.

Where the Brera loses out is steering feel / directness of turn in, rear seat space, fuel economy & stupidly long gearing that makes it feel slower than it actually is, economy & car tax.

In terms of attention, the Brera gets it all from the great unwashed. The GT is invisible in comparison. Most people think the Brera is some sort of super car, especially when you start it up & drive off slowly. It just sounds soooooo good:wow:

An unbiased but personal opinion. I thought the same of my 2.2 159 Ti. 95% of the time it trounced my 2.0 156.

It's progress - simple as!
