This probably ties in with the scrappage scheme thread, so...

According to what you read - or believe - we're facing the most challenging financial and environmental changes ever. I don't know how true that is because there's so much conflicting opinion, facts, and heresay, so forming a definitive view, is almost impossible.

But it makes you wonder - when you look at all the new cars for sale right now, how many of them do we need? If you think of all the precious resources needed to design, test and build cars, do we really need to deplete resources to build any of these:

Audi Q5
Audi Q7

BMW 1er
BMW X3
BMW X5
BMW X6

Anything by Bristol
Anything by Bugatti
Anything by Cadillac
Anything by Chevrolet
Anything by Chrysler
Anything by Daihatsu
Anything by Dodge

Fiat Boglo
Fiat Qubo
Fiat Sedici

Ford C-Max
Ford S-Max
Ford Kuga

Honda Legend (who, i ask, just who, buys these new? Are you thick?)
Honda CR-V
Hummer (all)

Hyundai (please, tell me - who will cry if Hyundai goes?)

Jeep

Kia (again - remind me of its significance?)

Maybach

Mazda (bar the mx-5 and rx-7)

Mercedes-Benz (just to teach it a lesson for over complicating and under engineering its cars, thus diluting the brand; yeah, you maybe an automotive legend, but by jimny you've banged out some right old shi5e in the last fifteen years)

Mitsubishi (the Lancer Evo is the only interesting car it makes. The rest can be scrapped)

Morgan (cool. If you live your life in the 1930s)

Nissan (we don't need five 4wd/suvs from you. i know that might sound keeeer-aaaazy that, but we don't. You can take the Micra and stick it in your pipe and smoke it, too)

Perodua. Now that's just a spelling mistake. That said, i love the Kenari [JOKE!!!] Oh, look, using my matches, i appear to have burnt down your factory! Sorry Perpodoura!

Peugeot. Hysterically terrible cars, which is a tragedy given the legends it has made. From the iconic 205 GTi, it now makes a car called the Tepee. With that and a design department that retired in 2001, draw your own conclusions to Pug's destiny...

Proton (see Kia)

Saab. I'll give you a stay of extended execution...but we've been waiting 20 years for a sign of Saab brilliance. Show it or die.

Seat. Cheers for turning up. Good night...

Ssangyong. Said it once when hammered as a joke punch-line (failed). Having depleted the earth of precious resources, what did they give us back? The Rodus.

Toyota. No one wants an Aygo, an iQ, Yaris, Auris or Verso. WAKE UP!

Vauxhall. Oh, you need to leave? No worries. Thanks for...do you know what, i wasn't even aware you were here. But thanks, anyway...

So Alfa have never made a mistake?

And Land Rover are squeaky clean?

BTW whoever thinks up Fiat model names needs a new set of fridge magnet letters.

Alfa's back catalogue is littered with mistakes...but in 100 years, Alfa has only ever made one boring car. There are manufacturers out there who in 100 years have never made one interesting car...

I'm passing on the Land Rover debate...it's not a fight i choose to pick...

But they don't make real cars, do they? I only ever see them on the hard shoulder or on the breakdown trucks.

At least my Spider has always managed to limp to the dealers under its own steam.

My 3 Citroens were the model of reliability, never had anything go wrong on them. :tut:

Why is Bugatti in there? Have they made a dull car for the masses that I have missed?

:cheese:

because, recently, they're trying.

I can think of an AX. A Starlet is lost on me.

I can think of a Xantia. A Carina E is lost on me.

I know what an XM is, but i can't even picture a Camry.

And i love the C6.

Wish I could say the same for my Alfa.

The irony is I bought it as I'd had 1, yes one, bad experience in 5 years with MB. Couldn't have bought another Merc though as they do make exceedingly dull cars these days.

Weve owned a BX, Xantia & 2 C5s, gave them all a hard time due to my wifes previous job as a parcel courier and they have just soldiered on with no problems outside of normal wear & tear.

Dull as bloody ditchwater though but bloody comfortable and different.

Yes. In the midst of a fuel crisis, the masses missed out on the need for a 1000hp road car. It left them less than underwhelmed.

Don't get me wrong...i love the Veyron, but it is pretty stupid.

Then dont you have to put in something like the 8C in there as well, I think its fuel economy is about 14mpg isnt it?

Pluriel - my, that was good value; with its coupe, pick up and convertible options, you got three shi5e cars for the price of one ;)

I don't even know what a Synergie or a C8 is. Never liked the ZX/Xsara (same car?) anyway.

Well I have an Alfa Spider (my luxury) but do look at the 'socialist' side of things.
My Land Rover can be recycled 80% and doesn't cost s*it if it were recylcled.
I wouldn't be driving it if I didn't need it.
A straight forward car. Aluminium and steel, and no gimmekry that I have to pay humungeous leasings for to keep those engineers and design teams in place. No inboard computers and I don't care if it's got a bang or a slash on the paintwork, actually makes it look better in my eyes. A car for a purpose (my job depends on it).
When you come to the Alfa.... well its first on the list for re-sale. I love driving it though.

To answer your question: As long as marketing can sell something you think is 'individual' then, YES, unfortunately depleting resources is a MONEY MAKER. Otherwise we'd all be driving the same cars - but this will come about with time.

I loved my light weight air cooled boxer 4 cylinder Citroen GS estate. Unfortunately, marketing didn't and citroen had to move on to standard 4 pots with all the gimmeckery (i-pod links etc etc) that the masses are overwhelmed to buy because they're told to do so and you're an NOBODY if you haven't.
As long as you are prepared to pay good money for anything you'll be HAD.

I see you're living in 'worlds other than these'... Good luck.
Most of us live in the current world.

Get a life.

-----so that is why you drive the possibly worst car ever made?...polo! (sh....tiest thing I ever owned!)
Bristol- love them or hate them, they are a part of UK motoring history, and have made a few decent cars up to the model 410.
Daihatsu- the little gt ti turbo was (I owned one) a dream of a car.

and i agree we have nothing to boast about with alfa. They might look decent (arna exception!) but some models in the past sure as hell have fallen apart faster than most cars ever made (in the west, at least)
