it's like a strange high pitched resonating noise. i've noticed it very slightly over the past couple of weeks, but today it got quite loud.

it sounds like the old 'test card' tone on BBC2!

all i can think of is fuel pump going?

There is not much else back there so you could be right. Mind you, does not necessarily mean that it will pack up altogether any time soon.

Are you sure its not the Mrs?

Seriously though, do you hear the noise only whilst the car is rolling or is it there when stationary?
it's on all the time BT, but it changes in volume from not there to quite loud.

it's weird, because it fades out when i turn the engine off...totally sounds like someone running their finger round a wineglass!

maybe i've got the special edition Ouija Board GTV...i'll try contacting elvis next time i take a run out to tescos.

Just out of curiosity, have you had an exhaust part changed recently?

Could be the radio? I get a constant noise from the speakers in the back of my GTV even when the radio is not even connected!?

I get a low whining noise in the back it only starts when the fuel warning light comes on and I only notice it at very low speeds or in a stationary position, once I fill up with fuel the noise goes straight away .

"wanna fill me in re the exhaust then ronny? i'm intrigued"
Its just something that I remember a while back with a V6 mondeo of all things.... A new front pipe that was causing a resonating high pitch sound like a "wine glass lip being circled by the edge of the finger" Sound familiar? It was cured by removal and re-fitting. We never found out why or how it was causing it but it did sound like it was coming from the rear too but the resonation was just louder... like a pitch fork vibrates at it furthest point.
It's just a place to start looking m8;)

bizarre! sounds like it could be that. prob easy way to cross check, i'll 'damp' the exhaust with something and it should quieten it.

I have the been going out of my mind due to the same sound  .
Asked a Alfa specialist about it, when I was at the garage with a few other annoying sounds: and the first thing the said was the fuel pump!

I had mine replaced a few months back. It gave in after I ran the car very close to dry. That killed it .
Not sure if the is a connection though.

Did run the car near dry again recently and the new fuel pump started to make the noise immediately after!

I've heard theories from several sources about "dirt" floating in the fuel tank, getting in the system/pump when trying to run on the last drops and having experienced it twice now I'm beginning to believe ;)

Well try putting your ear to the chassis near the fuel tank cover, when the engine is running.
If you can hear the sound deep in there it's probably the fuel pump

Otherwise the engine going in the stereo system is a possibility as well. I´m in the process of getting rid of that sound as well :D

Best of luck.

thanks crf, i let my tank run low quite often as i only ever fill it halfway and i seem to be constantly doing mileage checks.

reckon it's my exhaust or fuel pump.

I have exactly the same problem and can't get rid of the noise - its driving me nuts. It kinda sounds like tinitus in your ears. I live in Australia and have a '98 2.0 TS. Did you ever work out what it was?

bullant, i haven't repaired/replaced anything, as i've realised it only happens when the tanks fairly empty.

i'm going to see how things go.

see if you still get the noise when you have over half a tank in.

Always been able to hear the fuel pump in mine during 5yrs of ownership. Don't find it intrusive & quite normal by all accounts.

this isn't the hiss of the fuel pump simon, this is a very loud resonating tone that varies in amplitude.
