Why, I wonder, would we have not invented cars

It might be nice to think that it was because there wasn't any oil..
and that would be one source of conflict less... the world maps would
be very different.

Maybe we'd have developed steam vehicles instead.. and by now we'd be
fighting over dwindling coal reserves... Scargill would be PM
We would certainly have developed some form of mechanised transport
apart from the railways, canals and trams etc.

I can't imagine that we would have settled for bicycles and skateboards.

How about a society totally dependant on horses.... there was an enormous
pollution problem in 1900 with piles of poo... but we'd all grow better veggies.

Yes that's it... we'd all be on horseback
Leather seats, semi automatic steering, all the petrol stations would be blacksmiths,
but they'd fit fancy alloy horseshoes, people carriers would be Shires and Alfa Owners
would ride temperamental stallions. Of course we'd all like to ride on a thoroughbred
but they are very expensive and they often throw their riders :(

Donkeys would be the cheapest form of transport and in the holiday season they'd
all be towing caravans and causing massive tailbacks.

Parking our stallions would be the usual problem... some idiot would park his or her
Shire right alongside and it'd kick our beauties and damage their glorious looks...

Yep

Horses would be the solution

I am scared, a bit, by horses. They are unpredictably gangly, possessed of both a needlessly elaborate haircut and a potentially violent farmyard temperament- a bit like Andy Carroll, in fact.

Bicycles would be the answer, and still may be so. I think the future is going to be around waterproofed family 4 wheel bikes, where all the family pedalled, perhaps augmented by solar-powered electric motors and, possibly, sails.

Quality post GJ, I think the only thing to add is the Donkeys would be cheap imports from somewhere (I was going to say Korea but Spain sounds better) with sub standard shoes, suspect handling and run better with a nip of garlic now and then!

Steam locomotion! Chimneys! Blacksmiths! Foundaries! Rivets! Biolers!

Woohoo!

I might even come back to life for such an Eden.

No No No!... that doesn't work at all!

Push bikes have been around for nearly 200 years and look at them ....

The brakes don't work in mud or in the wet
The tyres barely grip an asphalt road surface and we'd have to fix all the potholes
They don't work at all on muddy ground
They require enormous amounts of effort from the rider
You can't carry 'pro-things to eat' in any quantity
If you have a family you have to keep changing the size of the bike
Manual gearbox has never been reliable

Sails and solar power have been tried..... doesn't work

All you'll need is some aversion therapy for fear of Gee Gees and you'll be on your way :D

I too share this concern, especially as I am 'centre-of- gravitationally challenged'
Unfeasibly large ears? But that would help with the wind power suggestion!
