I'm going to go against the trend here.

I think I want something with less power, and more feel next. I think i'll end up in something a bit older, like a DC2 Integra Type R, 145 Cloverleaf, or e30 325 or something similar.

Whilst I like my GTA a lot, I don't really love her like I did my 145, I think its due to the fact that I could ring my 145s neck, on the road and not be doing stupid speeds. Do that in the GTA and you are deep into licence losing speeds, also feel like the GTA doesnt have that much "feel".
I done the same when i sold my GTA, got a smaller less powerful car but do i regret it?....... Nope :D MiTo QV is such a good little car & so much fun.

I quite like the thought of getting a V8 next though, maybe an audi S4 avant or an AMG. Just the noise AMG's make is worth buying 1 for

Followed a C63 AMG estate today. Very quiet and reserved sounding through traffic and up to motorway speed. Didn't seem to have a great sense of occasion despite 4 huge exhausts. Maybe sounds better with more aggressive right foot.

Love the noise made by a C63 - but.....as a Jag Tech said to me it's still a C-Class Merc...and they are everywhere.. 156's are not often seen, a GTA.. well that is like hens teeth.

Why not an XKR :D or a Gransport

The GTA is a great all round package and a sleeper. The C63 is a very blunt instrument - fantastic engine but everything else about feels very dull and smothered by electronics - I have never felt really connected to the ones I have driven.

A logical move would be to an IS-F. One of the later facelifted models with proper LSD is a hell of a car, rare, an engine every bit as good as the AMG unit, ultra reliable, better built than any Merc / BMW and incredibly chuckable

I was lucky enough to drive the IS-F a lot recently around a track in Hungary and even better, be driven around by some professional drivers and it was fabulous

Yes it's a left field choice - the GTA is hardly mainstream either though

I fancy a car that doesn't exist.

I'd like the body shell of my nice, comfy, useful and spacious Ford CMax with the Audi Quattro 4 wheel drive system and a turbocharged V6 up front. 300bhp+ would be ample.

Closest is a Zafira VXR, but I prefer the Fords handling.

There is a nice E60 M5 in Sepang Bronze on PH for a cool 11k! Even I'd be tempted if I was looking to swap for something more sensible :)

Nearest to that I can think is an XC60 T6. Hardly any were sold though.

Been out car hunting to replace the A5 today. Settled on either a A7 biturbo diesel or a SQ5. Just keep thinking what about a Maserati then about an SZ. Got to convince the girlfriend the SZ make a wonderful everyday family car.

I had a VXR8 after the Alfa...and it kinda felt "similar"

It didn't have the style, panache or flair to touch the GTA, but it had that similar combination of rarity, character and mental-ness that made it fun and unusual. It cost more to run that the GTA too! Parts prices were insane.

"But its a Vauxall!" - well, it's not really. Its as much of a Vauxhall as an Alfa is a Ferrari if you put Ferrari badges on it. Stick HSV badges on and forget about the V.

As it still comes with a 6.2 V8, I think it's a good choice.

If you only need 2 seats then an Exige S Roadster would be my choice, or if you don't mind something a bit older then a TVR Sagaris would be quite high on my list...

BB, try out an Integra and you'll be grateful you chose a GTA first. In my experience my GTA was much faster, had better brakes, interior, sense of occasion, refinement...etc. and a supercharged one was no quicker, even with 300bhp. I guess they're not overrated, just that our GTAs, especially with the right mods done, are very much underrated and overlooked by many.

That's very interesting in you mention that as I've always wondered if they are as good as people say they are against the GTA, guess your answer also answers my questions!! A well sorted GTA is a wonderful thing to drive, I've almost finished the handling mods and power mods for now, yes I'm using your idea of widening the track as well as the wider rear tyres :)

When people like us choose a car it's usually down to a couple of things - performance and how it makes you feel.

I've had a bunch of performance cars over the last fews when I've finally been able to afford them, several GTV v6, Alfa GT v6, 350z, Cooper S (tuned), Z3 3.0 roadster.

I doubt any of the above could have got past the Cooper S on the twisties, seriously rapid machine but I finally sold it because I couldn't exploit it's potential on a road without seriously threatening life and limb and it's completely crap when driven slowly. For sense of occasion, the GTV's and the Z3 we're the best, in fact the z3 was completely awesome until it got written off :(

Most recent is a mk2 mx5. It's really slow but non the worse for that as you can actually have some fun in it without being a pest and it rides miles better than any of the cars on the above list and on the roads I like to drive on that's pretty important these days.

If you have the money though I'd deffo get a Maserati - speed, style and sounds!
