When it's a hybrid apparently....

As mentioned on here many times, I am a 7 seat car owner due to kids and dogs etc.

Our current 7 seater is a JLR Discovery Sport. It does the job well, but lacks reliability.

I bought it on PCP 4 years ago as I didn't want to own outright a diesel car because back in 2019 there was much talk of diesels being a target for tax etc.

So - 4 years on and on May 1st it's time to close out the PCP deal. My balloon payment is 19k and the car is currently selling for around 26-27k so my plan was always likely to be to pay the 19k and own the car outright so I could then use that 26-27k "asset" to buy something else.

Anyway - Yesterday the sales guy from JLR called me to say that he wanted to see if he could tempt me to renew the PCP for a new JLR Discovery Sport. "Just roll the payments on sir, and pick up a new car!"

He started by asking what I was looking for in a new car - so I said, well it's basically my 7 seat family/dog car, so that

It went a bit quiet......

"Oh". He said.

"What?" I said.

"That 7 seat issue is big for you is it?"

"Yes" I said.

Turns out that the only Discovery Sports being made by JLR currently (due to reduced manufacturing capacity) is the hybrid engined version.

And guess where the battery goes for the hybrid? Yep - It goes where the 3rd row footwell should be so the hybrid JLR Discovery Sport "7 Seater" is in fact a 5 seater.

So it's lucky really that I do want to cash out my PCP, because there's no 7 seaters in the JLR range currently for me to replace mine with..... Apparently they won't be building many non-hybrid cars for the foreseeable future.

Could you not just sell off a couple of your children? :p

It's not parts that is driving that. It's that it's being taxed out the market. JLR didn't even bother selling the SWB Defender here as it was €60K + €40K tax at launch.
Not sure how big a market France is for JLR - but in the UK you can't move for Land Rovers and Rangies, so they can definitely sell what they make.

That KIA looks really nice; apparently, it is only for the US market (where it is advertised as a ‘mid-size SUV’!).
I hear your pain. I have been driving a Discovery 4 for the last 10 years (5 kids & a dog) and absolutely love the functionality. The Disco 5 not so much (access to the 3rd row is not good and the design😳!).

Do you get hit with the tax if you import second hand cars to France?

I don't think so if it's not new. Just 10% flat rate of purchase price +VAT @ 20%. Then standard registration. Which is pegged TO C02:

For a meaty year-old petrol with 150g/km CO2 Registration would be ~€1300.

Hilariously, it's smaller than a Disco 5 too! (Well, in width anyway.)

Do you need the offroading capabilities of an SUV?

What's the options these days for something like Ford Galaxy / VW Sharan? Or a van-based 7/8 seater?
