So ... got home today and left this trail of fluid behind me. It's coming from the extreme nearside of the engine bay, beyond the clutch and gearbox. It's not oil or water so my guess is power steering fluid from failure of a pipe. It's making a horrendous screeching noise which is worse when steering, and a burning smell which I guess is cooked fluid with the pump running dry.

Here is a photo of the puddle - suggestions greatly received!

My old Bimmer had those symptoms. Keep the power steering fluid topped up until you repair it. In my case it was the power steering fluid. Keeping the fluid topped will stop the screeching.

Thanks. I would top it up but the leak is so bad I might as well just tip it onto the road, so I'll need to fix it at least well enough to drive to a garage.

2nd breakdown this month. Getting expensive. May need to sell a kidney at this rate ...
