Hi, I'm 17 and just away to buy my first car. Against lots of arguments about a first car being a old one etc. I have decided to buy a MiTo because i'd rather spend 8-15K on a car I actually like.

But before I go bother myself with the 200 mile drive to test drive one I wanted to know, whats the MiTo like to live with?

(No specific model just in general)

Thanks :D

Well like all forums you have probally seen loads of faults people have been reporting etc but thats normal to any car forum and hardly anyone puts a post about a car with no probs etc. I have had my car just over a year and i have had 1 rear light with water ingress and a slight coolant leak, thats it! its been brilliant, the ride can be slightly harsh and skittery over bumps and the steering is slightly vague. Servicing can be expensive so shop around and some mitos paintwork can be prone to stone chips etc but i drive to work every day in start stop traffic and find it very comfortable and a nice place to sit in. The standard stereo is brilliant and i have no end of comments and questions about the car all the time, its been a brilliant car and i have no regrets on getting this over mini/ds3/skoda/A1 etc etc etc:thumbs:

Hey Sam, just like your looking to do, this is my first car, which I've had now for a year and a few months. I've loved cars since I was old enough to know what they are, so buying my first car was so exciting. I looked at a few old cars, but had also wanted a new mini, so I went to the dealer and it was just too expensive with insurance and then if I wanted it to look half decent with options, so i was stuck with what to do, but then I came across the Mito and that was it...

It's still quite unique and although there are a few of us young dudes driving them, people do often give me a strange look when a young guy like me gets out of an Alfa instead of a Corsa/Fiesta etc. I love that.
It has great equipment, looks and even a sporty sound (95bhp) which you want when your 17/18 right? I've had no major problems with mine and it's runs beautifully. Another plus point, is this Alfa community. If you go to some of your local Alfa meets and events, there's a great bunch of people out there and that just makes your purchase feel that little bit more special.
All the best if you do go ahead with a purchase of one. Sorry for the essay. Haha. :)

whats insurance like... like others say, you wouldnt want to spend all your money on a car then not be able to affoard to insure it.

You need to consider the running costs also; servicing at main delaers if underwarrenty and the price of tyres for bigger 17/18" wheels aint cheap!

The mito is a nice car though

Agree with this, I'm 18 and this was my first car, no major problems with it, a few minor things which went really a problem but thought I might as well make the most out of the warranty, over all there's no better brand of car to own as a first car, I plan on owning many alfas after my mito , currently saving for my 8c ;)

You'll love the exclusiveness of the MiTo  Damn sight easier to live with
than my missus  Check out the various models insurance wise though before you commit
yourself, but why pay the same insurance for a 5-10 yr old shed?
My lad bought his self a 500 quid old banger and paid 1700 quid to insure it  Don't make
sense

I bought my 17 year old son a 1992 mini , insurance £ 1800:wow: oops got a pre reg Grande
Punto with all of 6 miles on the clock , insurance £ 996  Currently at 20 years old it is cheaper to insure him on the Mito with the old farts as named drivers , than use my 40+ years NCB :wow: Explain.

So first of all welcome Sam:thumbs: you will find that the Mito is insurance friendly compared with many other first cars. But please do your homework before getting one. The 95 bhp should be your best bet. Good Luck and you must be a man of taste going for an Alfa.

Go get a 5-10 year old car as your first car, you'll love it
Yep, there are plenty of other nice Alfas to check out before you pick out the cherry.

What's it like to live with? A true pleasure and a joy! It's something that never fails to put a smile on your face, it's fun, quirky, if not a little eccentric and never fails to turn heads, and they perform exceptionally well. If you do decide to go for one then I do recommend that you try out the Turbo MiTOs - you can probably pick up a TB120 as cheap as chips now. Good luck for whatever you decide to go for. ;)

9k is the cheapest I can find a 120TB on autotrader.

They are great cars.

Shop around alot, i had to settle for the 95 turismo, however it is nearly £1000 cheaper than the lusso trim and nearly £2000 cheaper than the veloce spec. more money to go towards insuring the thing. The only bad thing about the turismo is the wheels and the missing fog lights, which wont cost alot to change. I got some immaculate lusso wheels for £200 and pplan to buy some fog lights very soon. Just make sure you absolutely know what you want so you wont regret a thing :)

and ANY mods insure them... as a first time driver your bond to have a knock at some point.. Insure everything otherwise they'll not pay out - they are getting tougher.

I had a seat arosa as my first car - Amazing first car. Upgraded to a Suzuki Swift. Now on an extremely heavily modded Mito - there not cheap to run but there well worth the effort done right :) ENJOY

Thanks for the honest answers guys. Insurance is £788 per year for myself with my Mum as a named driver on a MiTo sprint with third party only. Which is a lot cheaper than most other cars I looked at. And ever since it came out and I saw the front page of Top Gear magazine I fell in love with it. My parents buy different cars quite a lot, so they were a little critical of my car choice, since my mums owned fiesta's from the style to ST and Corsa's. And now she owns a mini cooper sd. Which is a good car, but everyone seems to own a mini. Which made the MiTo stand out more and look even nicer.

I have literally just got the test drive details ready, so i'll make the 180 mile journey to drive one day to drive one :D

Can't wait, i'm buzzed.

Is it me or a 3rd party a bit of a risk with a new car and being a first car don't like the sounds of those odd's make sure you drive sensibly or you will regret it if you have an accident, if you can afford to get fully comp its just a bit of added protection especially as you are planning on spending £8-15k on a car.

Nothing would be worse than for you to crash the car and loose all of that money. (Not being patronising to a new driver) chances are most of us will crash a car at some point be it our fault or someone else's.

BE careful with this Insurance companies are very much on top of this now and your mum will need to also be on the V5 of the document... if your the owner of the car but not the named driver they will wiggle out of paying if an accident happens or you or your mum could be in for a pretty hefty fine!!

Your mum has a very boring taste in cars :p:lol:

Not sure I follow.....If he is the named owner, and the insurance policy holder with his mum or dad (or both?) as a listed driver(s) on the policy.....I don't see an issue? Am i missing something?

Think he means policy holder rather than a named driver thats how i read it.

Him as policy holder, mum as a named driver.

might also worth putting your dad on too, mine dropped an extra £100 just because of a second parent, was something like £300 off for adding dad another £100 off for adding mum.

Yeah, my quote was with Admiral. With my Mum as a named driver and the policy in my name so I can build up my own NCB (hopefully). I'll grab a quote to see how much cheaper it becomes with my Step dad as a named driver.

I might see how much more expensive it is when it isn't third party only. As I would be using it nearly every day thus the chances of me being wrapped around a tree increase. So i'd maybe like to be able to get something back if I do crash.

EDIT----

Found a Full Comp with my Mum as a named driver for £800 /year with admiral. :D
