Hey guys,

I've got a K reg narrow body 155 1.8, which I absolutely love.

My alfa garage are telling me it it's knackered... they can't work out what's wrong with it but it loses power at 1500revs. plugs all good, ignition leads changed, they say it's something to do with the throttle.

Do I give up now or throw a couple of 100 quid at it...bear in mind I'm a single mum with 4 kids but my 155 is one of my only joys in life!

no!

its a big desicion. If the dealer doesn't know whats causing it, can be sure it'll "only" be a couple of hundred? is there an alfa specilalist in your area who might help? and most importantly would a new car be an Alfa :)

maybe post the question in the tech/model lounge, you might find someone whos had the same thing....and they might not be logged in right now

ok thanks. The alfa 'specialist' who is advising me sold me the car in the first place?! It was running lovely when I bought it, had only done 72K despite it's age and I've had alot of work on it since but nothing out of the ordinary considering it's age. I really don't want to scrap it as I know that the older 155's are proper workhorses but this bothers me. It just dies on me up hills, once it gets over 2000 revs it picks up again and does what I know it should but when you're stuck behind a bus on the steepest hill in brighton..... i'll post this in tech as you suggest.

Any idea what they've checked on th car? Sounds like AFM but they should have checked that.

Fuel pump, throttle position sensor, crank angle sensor....etc etc etc

told you I was thick..what's AFM??

had a problem with the fuel pump a couple of months age which was electrical. The garage think it's a problem with the throttle, they cleaned it but it still makes a popping noise before it catchs..does that make sense...

ok, just read thru acouple of othe post and now know AFM is air flow meter, saw a post on the 146 describing a similar problem...is it possible my 155 suffers from the same problem as the 146. I'm no petrol head and I know nothing about the 146....

on a K plate you will have the 8 valve version - this wasnt shared with the 146 but it could still be the same type of problem. If you need spare parts cheap then PM rgwm (Alfa Breaker)

Start with the AFM and go from there - sounds like fuel and spark is ok if it picks up after 2K

Good luck :D

Firstly... Welcome to the forum :D

Secondly...You aint being thick, these problems are complicated and you've found the best place to help you solve the problem :D

The AFM is a little gadget that sits in the air intake pipe between the airfilter and the throttle, yes the AFM is the same as that on the 146(Not exactly the same but does the same job) basically the AFM fcuks up and the wrong reading gets sent to the car ecu (Brain of the car ;) ) which in turn means the fuel to air ratio in the throttle is wrong, in effect choking the car.

Popping noise?? Where?? Do you mean when you start the car?? Popping would indicate to me an overfueling problem ie. the fuel builds up somewhere and then burns (pops) all at once so it could be the fuel regulator

Hope that helps :)
