This part on the divers door 'cracked'(at the door side) when I allowed the door to swing open while parked facing downhill.

What is it called and how can it be fixed-I would say it needs replacing-there is no 'spring' in the door anymore.

And of course-will it be expensive-can any mechanic do it or does it need a bodywork specialist (or could I do it myself?)

It is the door check strap.

Any mechanic can do it, or you can DIY if you want.

It's a door strap.

How is it broken - has the bracket pulled away from the pillar, has the strap/pins broken, or has the internal door peice come away?

1 and 2 won't be expensive, 3 maybe.

It is usually the spring inside the door that fails.

But you replace the whole assembly, not parts of it.
They will only be around £10

Cheers lads-it looked like something that was inside the door frame broke at the point it was attached to the door.
