hi guys

which clutch would you recommend within reasonable financial and driveable parameters, for a chipped 2.4 jtd.

although my stock alfa clutch is only 7k old, i fear it has the beginnings of slip under top gear and peak torque loads, so i know another stock alfa one is not the option anymore.

i look forward to your replies..

incidentally - (alfanige) nige of angeltune, my preferred chip / tuner, is a top top bloke, as is his work, and i could not recommend it highly enough, and i shall be spouting and boasting my jtd's performance to anyone that will listen!

Adie at AHM will know (as we've discussed it as my JTD has been remapped by him ... although probably to more BHP then yours :p :D) ... I tend not to use full power in the higher gears at lower rpm to save the life of my standard clutch (which is starting to go if I'm very nasty to the car) ... but if yours is slipping alot then it is best to get it sorted ASAP because when it is slipping it is producing alot of heat which in turn can damage your flywheel ...

... also whilst your getting your clutch done get Q2 fitted at the same time ...

As Chris said, don't use full power at peak torque, drop a gear before you nail it. More power/acceleration there anyway, and the lower torque figure does help prolong clutch life.

I got my uprated clutch from CG Motorsport, Leeds. Was ÂŁ130, same price as a normal Alfa clutch kit. Friction plate was the same but clamping pressure greater by having thicker 'fingers'..

Behaves perfectly fine, not a race clutch feel to it at all, it was softer than the one it replaced.

hmm right cg motorsport gets 2 recommendations then, good start.

any difficuties in fitting it over a standard unit, and what gearbox oil works best?

shrew
As for gearbox oil, mine was just filled with the stuff Alfa recommend. Make sure you use new gearbox oil seals though, this is very important!!

Adie's website is AHMotorsports for everything Alfa ... but he's very busy and doesn't always respond to messages ... (he's also registered on here as Adie but normally hangs out in the Brera/159 lounge ...)

No, not trade, CG also sell on eBay, I put in an offer of ÂŁ130 and they accepted :D

They do two types of clutch though, I think theres a more expensive one with uprated friction plate as well. I did 20k hard miles on my CG Motorsport "cheapo" clutch and it was still as good the day I sold it, not sure you'd need the more expensive one if you were under or thereabouts 200bhp.

thanks pud

i'm supposedly chipped / tuned to just about 200bhp and 315/320 ft/lb torque

reasoning being that the alfa specs on the clutch were 330ftlb and the gearbox 360ftlb as a continuous reliable limit, i'm told...

to start with it was all good, only when i'd been on them motorway for some miles did it start to show any weakness at all, so its nearly there, just not quite!

Yeah, but check out the 'fingers' on the pressure plate, did you compare it against the fingers on the standard one when you had them both out? The fingers are much heavier duty, they looked to be angled differently too. This should give increased clamping pressure, which is what you want. The release bearing and friction plate were both stock Valeo components though, so it wouldn't last any longer.. But then I only paid ÂŁ130 which is what Alfa wanted for a stock JTD clutch anyway.

if the clutch is just valeo components, i don't suppose anyone has some part numbers do they?
incidentally, i checked with my loacl alfa dealer just for a laugh, and for a stock clutch, the only option they have anyway, is a ÂŁ900 job according to them! ha ha ha! NOT!

i did chortle...

happy new year!

pud

which alfa delaer quoted you 130 for a new clutch?

my quote is pennies short of ÂŁ900, including gearbox seals, fresh oil, and an estimate of, wait for it, five and a half hours labour!

even at say ÂŁ100 per hour labour that means the parts are ÂŁ350 ish, and i don't think even Chris Variava Nottingham dealership actually charge that much per hour.

it seems you're better then most at getting a good price, any chance you'll buy me a CG Motorsport clutch and i'll throw in a drink for your trouble!!!

Cheers, Happy New Year

easy chaps easy!!!

so we do know that alfa themselves is to be avoided for the labour charge and the fact that they're own standard clutch won't hold the torque from a chipped 2.4 jtd, for long anyway!

so to stay on topic, are there any other recomended suppliers other than CG, possibly Valeo or agents of, etc etc etc

thanks
