Hi guys,

I have something weird going on with my power steering. When I start the car after I haven't used it for a while the power steering is nice and light. After 10- 15 mins of driving it becomes heavy and difficult to steer on both sides!!!

Any ideas whats going on as it drives me crazy!!

Have you checked the fluid?
The power steering pipes at the rear of the engine are a frequent area of failure, they corrode through and leak.

As the fluid gets warm the pressure will be dropping so the steering gets worse. This isn't usually a problem unless the pump is getting weak. Is the steering better at high revs, i.e. ok when driving down the road but rubbish at corners at low speeds?

Check the fluid level but it sounds like your pump is failing, possibly caused by your previous leak letting the level get too low?

A second-hand pump should be ok for about £35.

I was constantly checking the steering fluid and even before fixing the leak it never dropped under the minimum. Can it be anything else other than the pump? Steering feels the same heavy at high or low revs after driving it for a while? Is this normal and I am just being paranoid? I just want to make sure that indeed there is something wrong before taking it to the garage!!

I had mine done for less than 2 hours work including some darn sticky bolts but then I have a V6 and the pump is at the front and quite easy. I suggest you call any Alfa specialist for a quote.

A new pump will cost a lot., A recon pump will be less. You should find a pump from a low miler in a scrap yard for £30-£40. Add some Forte pump reconditioner too (about £10). You pays your money and takes your choice, as they say.
