Despite the RS200 just shading the 6R4 as the Group B car I'd buy, I'm going with the Skoda because of its domination of its class at the RAC for years.

I found myself behind a road going one years ago. I was young and foolish and believed my Escort was invincible. It made a noise like a rhino farting and just went. It left me for dead.

The Merc and Alfa are both wonderful. But neither feel like they should be rally cars. They both feel like someone's taking the mickey. Same for the Volvo really.

So Ford or Skoda? The former screams rally car, so it wins.

RS200.....I used to know a VW customer of mine who ran a street legal(ish!) one (complete with the Ford blue race stripes!)...with just about a full house works spec motor!! Loud pipe and a 2000 ish rpm tickover meant "subtle" it was not! Was not that powerful as it came but with 246bhp and just 1180kg to haul around the RS200 was still a quick little thing.....and his had more than double that!!

Looked just like this....

There’s something improbable about the laid-back Mercedes as a snorting rally car that makes it very likeable, not least because it notched up a few victories.

The Skoda was the butt of jokes on the road, while at the same time it was doing very well in rallies for years. Its success there was overlooked or unknown by those who mocked it.

The Ford is one of the few cars that, just by looking at it, you can feel it. And it feels good!

I don’t know enough about the Volvo for it to get my vote.

The Alfa should be applauded for having victories in the Touring Car Championships as well as some rally success. It can wear two hats. But as much as I love it, it isn’t the best rally car here.

The Ford it is. And rightly so. (Then the Skoda)

The 450SLC was very much an endurance rally weapon for long distance events in Africa and South America where rallies cover thousands of miles. They even ran auto boxes.

A bit like the Peugeot 504; to finish first, first you must finish. You may as well have a bit of comfort too.

Weird SLC fact; it’s one of the few coupes to be spun out of a convertible platform. Usually, it’s the other way around. Never gelled with the SLC’s looks, probably because the SL was more popular and looked so right. But I now think the SLCs look fantastic. Kicking myself for not appreciating this and overlooking them years ago. Haven’t seen one for years.

In modern car terms, this would of course be billed as a fixed-head convertible coupe saloon :)

I know I'm like a stuck record but it's another example of a Merc that is just effortlessly classy. It's why I hate the modern ones (apart from Bazza's C63 obviously).

It often beat cars from the class above too. On one occasion, it even beat the proper group B cars.

The Alfa is the one I would have. The RS200 is super cool but at the same time I don't like it.
