Chris Conlon

Lives

Originally from good 'ol co. durham but i've lived in leicestershire for the last ten years

Marital Status

Living with my wife (as good as) of ten years

What cars do you drive and why?

Alfa 156gta Sportwagon, this is my fifth Alfa and I’m well and truly hooked, it's also quite practical, especially for getting on first name terms at your local petrol station, and I love the sound of that V6

Would you describe yourself as passionate about Alfa Romeo?

Very, very much so they are a very large part of my life

What or how started your passion for Alfa Romeo and…
… do you think it’s fundamental to own one to have the passion?

Tough one, as a child I had many toy Alfas and to me at that time they were in the same league as Porsche's etc, however there was a bright red Alfetta a couple of streets from where I lived which I used to drool over as a kid, to me that was the coolest looking car in the whole town. I don't think that it's fundamental to own one but it helps to keep the passion alive, and once you have your addicted.

What do you like most about Alfas?

The engines, the sound, cornering, being different, that knowing smile between owners that other people just don't get, the community that goes with it, I used to love the exclutivity but lately it seems our secrets out.

What do you like least about Alfas?

The dealers and the depreciation not to mention those rattles

What would be your dream cars?

A classic Alfa TZ2, the 8C competizione (shame it never made production) a Ferrari Dino, a 155V6TI and a Porsche 911 a hang up from my childhood

What car would you least like to own?

A car which couldn't bring a smile to my face for any reason, motoring costs so much money and you spend so much time in them you might as well enjoy them

In your opinion, what is the most popular thread on AO?

It used to be JNT but nowadays it seems to be word association

Do you remember your first post on AO, and if so, what was it about?

I know I didn't introduce myself which was naughty and no I can't remember what it was.

What would be your ideal drive in an Alfa (destination, passenger, driving music, etc)?

Ideal drive would consist of touring Scotland, the north east, heading over the channel and through Europe, wasp playing on stereo and that red haired girl from Emmerdale scantily clad in the passenger seat.

Any humorous Alfa or car-related stories you wish to share with us?

There are many but one of my favourites was a visit to my local Alfa dealer to buy a GTV. My son was just approaching his first birthday so I though it was the perfect excuse to go and buy an Alfa GTV (spider technically) pedal car, only available from the dealers so I went down babe in arms, salesman walked over with the usual sarcasm 'can I help you sir?'
'yes I’d like to buy a GTV please'
his face was a picture with commission wrote all over it and he could hardly contain his smile he was practically falling over himself
'Would you like a test drive sir?
'no I just want to buy one'
(a middle aged couple looking at 156 are now staring in disbelief)
'Well yes sir no problem, do you know which model you would like?'
'it's got to be red'
'We can supply any spec in red do you want the two or the three litre?'
'No, just the child’s pedal car please!'
his face was a picture, it changed from glee to 'I could punch your bloody lights out' in milliseconds as he said through gritted teeth
'I’ll get someone from parts' as the couple burst into hysterics and he storms off....
Thoroughly enjoyable.

What interests do you have outside of Alfas?

Socialising at the pub (code for drinking beer) camping with the family, I enjoy the quality technology free time this gives me with my boy, building radio controlled models, rock music, the list goes on....

Tell us something nobody knows about you. (e.g. special skill, ever been on TV, etc)

I can sing a mean 'chocolate salty balls'
in the rock style on a karaoke, usually stuns people.

What do you like most about the Alfaowner forum? Any favourite threads, episodes or posts you wish to share?

I think it's a great community where people can share there problems and have a laugh mixing the serious with the not so serious, helping out and being helped.
I particularly liked the insane replies to the strange windscreen phenomenon thread, had a great laugh there.

Thanks for your time Chris, an enjoyable read

Ah that's because somewhere in my past (not traced it yet) someone was irish, given that i come from the first railway town (shildon at the beginning of the stockton and darlington railway) i pretty much assumed that my distant relatives were navies and settled in shildon as work in the workshops which were built just after the line was completed must have been far preferable and better paid than the navvy life, btw as far as i have traced the surname was conlan but due to some error somewhere became conlon around 1850ish, probably distant relatives i guess :)
