Some time ago, after I'd had two new tyres fitted and balanced to my 156 1.9jtd 16v, 2005, 104k, I experienced a vibration between 70 & 80mph (Yes, not strictly legal!), which was similar to going over a corrugated section of road, like rumble strips, and could be felt through the floor, and a little on the steering wheel. I immediately thought of unbalanced wheels, and returned to the tyre fitter, who discovered I had two slightly warped wheels.
I had these corrected and rebalanced by a specialist company, only to find the vibration was still there, though somewhat reduced.
Back to my tyre fitter, who checked balance to find it within their 'normal' balance limits, but he did a 'more critical' balance, which resulted in another small improvement.
The vibration was still there, but tolerable, so I recently decided to swap front and back wheels to see if it was still there. It was, but worse, and highlighted another symptom, which was that it was worse on accelerating between the aforementioned speeds.
Having swapped wheels again, whilst I can put up with the vibration, I'm a little concerned that something in the drive train, or elsewhere, may be amiss.

Can anyone help, please?

On my 8 valve I found your description a symptom of a worn driver's side driveshaft middle joint. Having never owned one, I'm not sure if the 16v driveshaft is the same setup as my 8v, but maybe check to see if there is any excessive play in the middle joint.

If it is this, I swapped the whole of the driveshaft (gearbox to hub, with CV joint) as it was cheaper and easier than swapping just the worn joint. I got mine from these guys. The new shaft solved my symptoms.

Thanks for your interesting and comprehensive reply. I'll look into the suggestions you have made when I have more time, and will post results. But in fairness I have to say it could be quite some while.
