Hello,
I've been told that if I have a diesel noise at startup that my variator is bad. But, my '01 156 1.8ts-sw runs like a top and I got 37mpg(UK) on my last tank (mostly my wife driving, admittedly). I do need to do the cambelt in a few months. Do I just replace the variator? Can its fitness be visually ascertained when the belt is off? The noise is subtle, but there. I naturally don't want to fix anything that isn't broken, but I especially don't want to mess with a system which is working so well!

Can't be changed alone, so have it done with belts

Leave it 'til the cam belt is due and change all the parts at the same time.

That's the thing. I'm getting great performance and economy. When I do the belt (singular), how do I decide whether or not to do the variator as well?
